Hickory Crawdads News Release
Hickory's late start to the season turned out to be worth the wait -- the Crawdads capped a wild weekend of action at home by taking a pair of games from West Virginia on Sunday, both by a 1-0 score. In game one, the Crawdads had Miles Durham double his way on to lead off the bottom of the seventh inning, the last scheduled inning of a doubleheader game. The very next batter, Erik Huber, laced a single through the hole into right field to drive Durham in and give Hickory its second straight walk-off win.
The theatrics wouldn't end there for the Crawdads, though, who received help from the Power in winning game two.
After an intentional walk to load the bases in the bottom of the eighth inning, West Virginia reliever Nick Tyson uncorked a wild pitch to hitter Austin McClune, allowing Danny Bomback to score from third base and give Hickory its third straight win on the last pitch of the game.
Besides the thrilling finishes, pitching ruled the day for both teams.
Hickory received its best starting effort of the early year in game one when Dustin Molleken allowed just two hits and one walk across six shutout innings while striking out eight. Harrison Bishop (1-0) earned the win, pitching a 1-2-3 inning of his own.
The duo outdueled West Virginia's Evan Anundsen, who surrendered three hits and no walks across six shutout frames. Carlos Garcia (0-1) took the loss after allowing Durham and Huber's hits.
Game two told the same story, as Michael Felix, Dionis Rodriguez and Moises Robles (1-0) combined for eight shutout innings, allowing just four hits and three walks while striking out nine.
West Virginia's R.J. Seidel threw five scoreless innings in the start; Tyson (1-0) allowed just the one run in 2.1 innings, but still suffered the loss.
The sweep, combined with Sunday's other South Atlantic League results, propelled Hickory (3-1) into a first-place tie atop the Northern Division with Greensboro and Lake County. West Virginia (1-3) sits at the bottom of the division with Lakewood and Lexington.
The Crawdads return to action Monday night, when they start an eight-game road trip at Greensboro. First pitch is set for 7:00. Listen to the Crawdads on the road right here at HickoryCrawdads.com as Mike Janela brings you all the action.
