Bluecats Outlast Believers in Record-Setting Game
May 11, 2004 - National Indoor Football League (NIFL)
Evansville BlueCats News Release
The Evansville Bluecats trip to St. Charles, Missouri to take on the show-Me Believers on Saturday proved to be a night of many firsts. The Bluecats took home an 88-84 squeaker to secure their 1st ever road victory and their 1st ever 2-game win streak. The win also evened up their season record to 3-3, the 1st time the team has been to the .500 mark in their short history.
For the second week in a row, only the clock stopped the Bluecats, as the only offensive possession in which they didn't score was at the end of the 1st half in a possession that started with 10 seconds left. The back and forth battle featured a record-setting performance by quarterback Ramon Robinson who went 28 for 36 for 399 yards and no interceptions. Robinson threw 7 touchdowns and Michael Cosey rushed for 6 touchdowns in the game. Rookie wide receiver Demetrius Doss had a breakout game as he hauled in 12 receptions for 137 yards and 3 touchdowns while John Gordon led the team with 138 yards receiving and also added 3 touchdowns receiving. Byron Curtis added 139 all-purpose yards including a team record-tying 44-yard touchdown reception in the middle of the 1st quarter.
As the âCats defense struggled, the special teams again provided the extra spark needed to preserve a hard fought victory. Brad Zientara recovered his own onside kick after the Bluecats scored to go up 74-70 with 2:32 remaining on the clock. The extra possession provided by the recovery proved fruitful as Michael Cosey punched it in with 1:43 left to gain an 11-point margin that proved to be insurmountable. Two defensive onside recoveries by the Bluecats and another Cosey touchdown helped seal the victory against the tough and talented Believers.
The high-powered Bluecats will head home to the "Fish Bowl" at Roberts Stadium this Saturday to face the Atlantic City Card Sharks with a chance to go over .500 for the 1st time ever. The game features ½ price tickets for EVSC high school students with a valid student ID and an appearance and autograph signing by Jacksonville Jaguars safety Deke Cooper and 10 other NFL players. Gates open at 6:00 PM with kickoff at 7:05 PM. For tickets, call the stadium box office at 476-1383 extension 25 or log on to www.evansvillebluecats.com.
