Vermont Mountaineers News Release

MONTPELIER, Vt. - The Valley Blue Sox topped the Vermont Mountaineers 6-4 on Friday night in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action in Vermont's season opener at Recreation Field.

The home team had a 12-8 advantage in hits over Valley but left nine runners on base in the process.

The Blue Sox started the scoring early, when they added two runs in the first inning on two base hits and a walk. Left fielder Nick Sinay (Syracuse, N.Y./University) of Buffalo) singled, Chris Gonzalez (Canovas, N.Y./Delaware State University) walked, and both later came around to score on a Robert Pescitelli (Bay Shore, N.Y./Quinnipiac University) double.

Vermont would answer right back, though, with a run of their own in the home half of the second inning. Thomas Roulis (New Hyde Park, N.Y./Dartmouth College), who was making his return to Recreation Field after playing for the Mountaineers in 2013, hit a double and was driven in by Simon Rosenbaum (Los Altos Hills, Calif). Roulis went 2-for-4 on the day with a single, a double and two runs scored.

The score remained 2-1 until the third, when the Blue Sox added on two more. Sinay led off the inning with a single to center before scoring on a double to right field by Manuel De Jesus (Caguas, Puerto Rico/Ohio University). Both runners stopped at second and third, respectively but De Jesus overran second so Sinay was sent home while De Jesus was out on a 9-6-5 putout.

Pescitelli was then hit with a pitch on a 2-2 count before scoring on an RBI single by John Adryan (Delran, N.J./Ohio University) to put the Blue Sox ahead 4-1. Vermont had runners on first and second in the bottom of the inning before Garrett Copeland (Barltett, Tenn./Austin Peay State University) grounded into an inning ending double play.

After a quick 1-2-3 inning, by Mountaineers starting pitcher, Tom Cosgrove (Staten Island, N.Y./Manhattan College) in the top of the fourth, Vermont cut the lead to 4-2 in the bottom half.

Roulis singled to center field before Northfield, Vermont native, Billy Whaley (Northfield, Vt./Norwich University) advanced him to third on a single. Roulis scored on a passed ball before Derek Chapman (Issaquah, Wash./Washington State University) grounded out to end the inning.

The Mountaineers tied the game at four following inning. Ridge Smith (Clarksville, Tenn./Austin Peay State University) reached on an infield single before stealing second base. Copeland then hit a ball off the first base bag that bounced down the line to reach second while Smith scored on the play. Copeland moved to third on an errant throw by Valley's Pescitelli. He scored on a sacrifice fly by Austin Clemons (Louisville, Ky./University of Louisville).

Neither team scored the next inning but Valley took the lead in the top half of the seventh. With an out in the inning, Cornell Nixon (Marieta, Ga./Kennesaw State University) singled to right field before Sinay walked to put runners on first and second. Both runners moved on a double steal before De Jesus doubled to the right field gap to plate both runners.

Vermont was unable to get a runner past second for the remainder of the game as Sam Donko (Cortland, Ohio/Iowa Western Community College) came in to shut the door for the Blue Sox for the second win of the season.

Drew Lunde (Sammamish, Wash./Washington State University) took the loss for Vermont going two and a thirds innings, giving up two runs on two hits while fanning two. William Worswick (Mountainside, N.J./La Salle University) picked up the win for Valley going one and two thirds of relief work, allowing one hit, one free pass, and striking out one.

Cosgrove went four full innings for Vermont scattering six hits and giving up four runs while fanning two. Sam Delaplane (San Jose, Calif./Eastern Michigan University) pitched two and two thirds innings without allowing a hit and only surrendering two walks while fanning five.

The Mountaineers return to action tomorrow night as they travel to Goodall Park in Sanford, Maine to have a rematch of last years Northern Division Finals, where the Mainers ended Vermont's 2014 campaign. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. The game can be heard on CBS 1240 WSKI or online at www.thevermontmountaineers.com.
