Waves Fall to Bay Sox in Season Opener 8-2

WAKEFIELD, R.I. - In their season opener, the Ocean State Waves fell 8-2 to the New Bedford Bay Sox in front of 985 fans at Old Mountain Field Thursday night.

New Bedford attacked first in the top of the third on Tyler Orris' (Millersville) single that drove in Jacob Friar (Sacred Heart) and TJ Dixon (Samford). Another pair of runs scored on Anthony Critelli's (Holy Cross) double gave the Bay Sox a lead of 4-0. Again, the Bay Sox struck again in the top of the sixth, Friar scored on a throwing error by right handed pitcher George Capen (Holy Cross). For an additional insurance run in the sixth inning, Orris drove in Dixon with a double to make the score 7-0. Orris then scored on Aaron Huesman's (Dayton) single for another run.

Bay Sox hurler Howie Brey (Rutgers) kept the Waves at bay until the eighth inning when the bats came alive. Michael Corin (Rhode Island) scored on Chuckie Robinson's (Southern Mississippi) blast to the outfield to bring the Waves back into the game. Shortly after Chuckie Robinson (Southern Mississippi) scored to close the gap to a six run difference.

The Waves played with a handful of pitchers, starting with Tony Dibrell (Kennesaw State), then followed by Geoffrey Murphy (Boston College) in the fourth, Capen in the sixth, Matt Murphy (Assumption) in the seventh, then due to an injury on Murphy, Corey Randall (North Carolina Asheville) in the top of the eighth.

For New Bedford, Orris went 2-for-3 with two runs, four RBI, and two walks, and Critelli went 3-for-5 with two RBI. For the Waves, Jake Palomaki (Boston College) reached base four times and went 2-for-4 with a walk, and Nick Dawson (Southern Mississippi) and Alex King (Saint Louis) each had a single RBI on the day.

The Waves will continue their season away against the Danbury Westerners June 5th. First pitch is set to start at 6:30 p.m.
