Bay Sox Win Second in a Row

June 5, 2015 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
New Bedford Bay Sox News Release

The Bay Sox began their young season with back-to-back wins on Friday night. In a southern divisional bout at Paul Walsh Field, Bay Sox batters for the second night in a row successfully capitalized on walks by opposing pitching, plating seven runs in a long home half of the sixth. Bay Sox starting pitcher Justin Thomas (Quinnipiac) had a less than stellar night on the mound. Thomas allowed six runs on six hits and two walks tossing 2.0 innings of work. Pilgrims starting pitcher Patrick Naughton (Virginia Tech) went five complete and kept Bay Sox batters in check during his time on the mound. Naughton allowed four runs on six hits picking up the no-decision in his season debut. After taking an early lead, the game would slip away from the Pilgrims during the walk infested sixth as the Bay Sox would take the lead and not look back, winning the game with a final score of 13 to 7. "This was a team win for sure", said manager Kyle Fernandes, "we have a real good group of guys in here and a win like this builds the comradery that this team already has."

Tonight's First Citizens' Player of the Game is awarded to Jayson Sullivan (Sacred Heart). Sullivan went two for two at the plate driving in three Bay Sox runners while swiping his first bag of the season. Ryan Fredrick (Georgia Southern) recorded a tremendous outing in relief for New Bedford. Fredrick went four strong innings and kept the deficit down to a minimum enabling a comeback for the home team. He struck out six batters allowing only three hits and a sole run. Brent Rooker (Mississippi State) had himself a night for Plymouth batting 3 for 4 while driving in two and stealing three bases. New Bedford will be back in action for the third consecutive night on Saturday as they look to take on the defending NECBL champion Newport Gulls.
