Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Despite winning 6-5 in their previous game, the Wilmington Blue Rocks lost 2-0 in their first no-hitter of the season against the Hudson Valley Renegades.
The first two innings remained scoreless for both teams, but the Renegades were quick to end this trend in the top of the third inning. Left fielder Pat DeMarco singled on a fly ball down center field to find himself in position to run home on an RBI double from Eduardo Torrealba.
The Blue Rocks failed to respond to this, however, and the Renegades kept up the momentum in the fifth inning after designated hitter Trey Sweeney was walked to first, was pushed to third on a single from Jasson Dominguez, and finally stole home to set the game 2-0.
With Wilmington still hitless, Hudson Valley added a third to their tally off of a sacrifice fly from right fielder Grant Richardson to send in Cooper Bowman, who had reached on a throwing error by Drew Mendoza at third base.
Finally, in the bottom of the eighth, with the score 3-0 in favor of the Renegades, the Wilmington Blue Rocks saw their first and only hit of the night from designated hitter Kevin Strohschein. After a breaking ball from relief pitcher Alex Mauricio, Strohschein produced a sharp ground ball to land on first base.
Unfortunately, this wasn't enough for the Blue Rocks to gain momentum and the Hudson Valley Renegades took the game 3-0, tying the series 1-1 overall.
Starting pitcher Beck Way was handed the win for the Renegades after throwing 43 strikes over 71 pitches and striking out four. Rodney Theophile, the starting pitcher for Wilmington, was handed the loss for the game despite his 52 strikes thrown over 81 pitches and three strikeouts.
The Wilmington Blue Rocks will return tomorrow on Sunday, July 24, as they attempt to secure the win for the series in their last game against the Hudson Valley Renegades. First pitch will commence at 1:05 p.m.
