Blue Jays Split Doubleheader against Bristol

June 24, 2016 - Appalachian League (ApL)
Bluefield Ridge Runners News Release

BLUEFIELD- The Blue Jays split their opening two games with the Bristol Pirates, taking the first game 9-4 and dropping the second 4-2.

The bats showed up for Bluefield in the first game, as the Blue Jays were able to blast three home runs. Edward Olivares and Earl Burl III had solo shots, while Bradley Jones raked in a two run blast in the seventh. The Blue Jays were able to score seven runs in the bottom of the seventh, which was enough to give Christian Cox his first win on the season.

The second game of the night proved less than favorable for Bluefield. Yoel Gonzalez victimized Bluefield pitching, going 2 for 3 in the shortened game with a home run as well as a double. Adrian Valerio also added a solo home run in the fourth inning, propelling the Pirates to their first victory on the season.

Even though the second game was slightly disappointing for the Jays, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. made some noise at the plate. With his father in attendance, Guerrero Jr. nailed his first professional home run into left-center. The two-run homer gave the Blue Jays the lead in the bottom of the third, but the Pirates were able to tie the game back up in the top of the fourth. Guerrero was also 1 for 4 in the first game with two RBIs.

The Blue Jays will close out the series with the Bristol Pirates tomorrow at Bowen Field at 7:05 PM. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
