Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release

FORT MYERS, Fla. (May 11, 2015) - The Dunedin Blue Jays capitalized on three errors from the Fort Myers Miracle for a 5-2 win at Hammond Stadium on Monday night.

The Miracle struck first in the second inning without the benefit of a hit. Niko Goodrum led off by drawing a walk from Blue Jays starter Murphy Smith. Goodrum then swiped second and third base. After Jason Kanzler struck out, Mitch Garver lifted a fly ball to right field deep enough to plate Goodrum on a sacrifice fly, 1-0.

Dunedin countered for four runs in the top of the third. After a pair of scoreless frames in his return from the disabled list, Miracle starter Kohl Stewart walked Dickie Joe Thon to begin the inning. Then, Roeman Fields roped a single to right. Dawel Lugo was retired on a ground ball to third for the first out, but Thon and Fields advanced. Stewart (0-3) loaded the bases after hitting L.B. Dantzler on the leg.

Matt Dean stepped up and rolled a 1-1 pitch to Goodrum at third base. Attempting to start a double play, Goodrum's throw sailed into right field and two Dunedin runs scored. Dean was credited with a fielder's choice and RBI with the second run scoring on the error.

Stewart exited the game and manager Jeff Smith called on Alex Muren from the bullpen. Inheriting runners at first and second, Muren let loose a wild pitch that pushed both into scoring position. Mitch Nay then grounded out to short for the second out, but Dantzler crossed home plate to extend the Blue Jays' lead to 3-1.

Derrick Loveless followed with an infield hit on a line drive that went in-and-out of Goodrum's glove. All four runs were charged to Stewart, but only one was earned. Stewart lasted only 2.1 innings with four hits allowed and two walks.

David Hurlbut took over for Muren in the fourth and finished the game. Hurlbut gave up an unearned run on a two-out RBI hit from Dantzler in the seventh, but surrendered just two hits and struck out five in a strong performance.

Murphy (1-2) earned the win for the Blue Jays over five innings with two runs give up on fourt hits, one walk and four strikeouts. Alberto Tirado tossed three scoreless frames in relief for Dunedin and Will Browning nailed down his ninth save.

Zack Granite and Marcus Knecht each had two hits for the Miracle and Alex Swim extended his Florida State League best hitting streak to 15 games.
