Dunedin Blue Jays News Release
DUNEDIN, FL - Dunedin Blue Jays RHP Taylor Cole has been named the Florida State League's Pitcher of the Week for the period of July 21 - July 27. In two starts this past week, Cole went 1-1 with a 1.50 ERA, allowing just five hits and two runs with 21 strikeouts in 12 innings.
The 24-year-old starter from Las Vegas, Nevada racked up a career-high 12 strikeouts against the Bradenton Marauders last Monday, walking just one batter and allowing two hits in 6.2 innings. After tallying nine more Ks against the Charlotte Stone Crabs on Saturday, Cole now leads all of minor league baseball with 143 strikeouts in 2014. He also tops the Florida State League with an 11.33 K/9 ratio.
With approximately six starts remaining in the regular season, Cole is within reach of the Dunedin Blue Jays single-season strikeout record of 173, which was set by Joel Carreno in 2010. The Florida State League's single-season strikeout record is held by John Ivory Smith, who struck out 302 hitters for the 1955 Daytona Beach Islanders.
Cole has held opponents to three runs or fewer in 17 of his 20 outings this season, and his 2.92 ERA ranks in the FSL's top 10 among active pitchers.
After a stellar first half (5-2, 2.19 ERA, 95 Ks in 78 IP) Cole was selected to the 2014 FSL All-Star Game, and was named the starting pitcher for the North Division All-Stars.
He joins Dunedin teammates Dalton Pompey, Marcus Knecht and Matt Boyd (twice) as recipients of the Florida State League's weekly honors this season.
Cole, the 2012 Northwest League Player of the Year, was selected by the Blue Jays in the 29th round of the 2011 draft out of Brigham Young University.
