Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release

The Blue Crabs came from behind to edge the Newark Bears 4-3 Wednesday night at Regency Furniture Stadium. Southern Maryland has now won three in a row and five of its last six.

RHP Dan Reichert pitched seven innings and struck out five to improve to a league best 13-7. Meanwhile, Bears LHP Shane Youman's eight strikeouts through six innings was not enough as he dropped to 3-5.

Newark went ahead 1-0 in the first as second baseman Tim Raines, Jr. scored on an RBI double by leftfielder Elijah Dukes. Raines, Jr. drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second on a passed ball and then moved third on a sac bunt by centerfielder Kennard Jones before Dukes's hit. Dukes doubled the Bears lead in the third with an RBI sac fly, scoring Raines, Jr. again.

The Blue Crabs came back and roughed up Youman the following inning. Designated hitter Matt Craig reached first on a third strike that skipped underneath catcher Isaiah Kaaihue. Youman's wild pitch was costly, as first baseman Eric Crozier blasted a two run homer, his 17th of the year, to straightaway centerfield. Two batters later, leftfielder Ben Harrison gave the Crabs a 3-2 advantage with an RBI double that scored shortstop Travis Garcia.

The Blue Crabs tacked on what proved to be the game-winning run in the fifth. Rightfielder Jamar Hill led off with a triple and scored on third baseman Jeremy Owens's RBI sac fly. Designated hitter Carl Everett brought the Bears within one when he crushed a solo homer to rightfield in the eighth. It was his ninth home run this season.

RHP Jim Ed Warden then came in with two outs in the eighth and recorded his league best 22nd save.

At 64-39, the first place Blue Crabs maintain the best overall record in the Atlantic League and are a season-high 25 games over .500. They also hold the circuit's best second-half record as well at 23-10.

The Blue Crabs will be back in action Thursday evening at Regency Furniture Stadium, in the finale of this four-game series against Newark, continuing a seven-game homestand. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. with LHP Kelvin Villa (2-5, 6.88) on the mound for Newark, against LHP John Koronka (0-0, 0.00) for Southern Maryland as the Crabs go for the sweep.
