Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
The Bridgeport Bluefish are nearly perfect these days.
Tike Redman went 3-for-3 with three RBI, and Matt Pike pitched seven strong innings as Bridgeport dumped the Lancaster Barnstormers, 9-3, Tuesday evening at Harbor Yard.
Bridgeport has won 10 of 11 decisions in August to move within one-half game of Southern Maryland in the Freedom Division.
On Tuesday evening, Bridgeport did not miss a beat. The Bluefish were 5-for-7 with runners in scoring position. The defense was not guilty of an error and turned four double plays. They snuffed out Lancaster's one steal attempt. Their three pitchers walked only two.
There was no chink in the armor.
Lancaster had its best opportunity to take control of the game at the outset. Lloyd Turner led off with a lined single into left. Michael Woods walked, and a single into right by Jason Perry loaded the bases with nobody out. Matt Pike (10-4) hit his stride just in time. He struck out Aaron Herr. Reggie Taylor brought one run across with a grounder chopped to the left of second baseman Hiram Bocachica. Pike struck out Ryan Mulhern to end the inning with just one run on the board.
Bridgeport got it back right away. Adam Greenberg yanked a double down the right field line, moved to third on a fly ball to center by Danny Putnam and scored on a sacrifice fly to right by Redman.
Jose Sanchez (4-9) retired nine straight before running into trouble in the fourth. Putnam drilled a double to right and scored on Redman's ground single up the middle for a 2-1 Bridgeport lead. Two outs later, with Redman running on a 3-2 pitch, Colin Roberson ripped a single into right center. Redman came all the way around to score, with the help of a bobbled relay as the Bluefish went ahead by two.
Roberson's two-run double that shorthopped the left field wall in the sixth solidified the Bridgeport lead. Adam Witter got one run back with a homer to right in the top of the seventh, but the Bluefish erupted for four in the bottom of the inning.
Luis Rodriguez crushed a double to right center and scored on Brandon Chaves' high bouncer to right. Greenberg walked, and both runners advanced on a passed ball. Putnam tripled home both men for an 8-2 lead, and Redman put the final Bluefish run on the board with his third straight single up the middle.
The series shifts to Clipper Magazine Stadium for a 7:00 start on Wednesday evening. Ben Fritz (3-6) will make the start for the Barnstormers while Denny Stark (6-2) will go for the Bluefish.
NOTES: Witter's homer was his fourth since coming off the DL...An RBI single for Aaron Herr was the first Lancaster hit, other than a home run, to drive in a run in 25 innings...The Barnstormers finished their road trip, taking only three of nine decisions...The two-hour, 27-minute game was the quickest played by the Barnstormers in the second half.
