Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release

The Blue Crabs took a lead into the late innings, but the bullpen couldn't shut the door in a 6-3 loss to the visiting Somerset Patriots.

Heading into the sixth, the Blue Crabs appeared to be poised for victory against the Freedom division leading Patriots. With a 3-2 lead and reliever Matt Schweitzer coming to the mound, the 4,801 fans at Regency Furniture Stadium appeared confident that their club would cruise to victory.

That would not be the case, though, as Schweitzer was hit hard for one of the few times this year, giving up two runs in only two-thirds of an inning. To his credit, only one of those runs was earned, as the Southern Maryland defense disappeared in the last three frames.

The loss is Schweitzer's first of the year, while Frank Brooks picked up his fifth victory of the season in relief of Jim Magrane. Magrane pitched 6.2 innings in a no decision, giving up eight hits and three runs.

The Blue Crabs gave up six runs in the final four innings, with the Patriot offense putting up two runs each against Bicondoa, Schweitzer, and Travis Wade.

Tomorrow night the Blue Crabs will play host once again to the Patriots, with the game time scheduled for 6:15 pm. On the hill will be Adam Johnson, who continues to work his way back from an elbow injury.
