April 27, 2018 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
(Waldorf, MD.) - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs have finalized their roster in preparation for Opening Day of the 2018 season.
The final roster features nine returning players from last season's playoff run, highlighted by the return of four 2017 Atlantic League All-Stars. The team also boasts seven players with MLB service time, including two with over five years in the majors.
The offense will be led once again by All-Stars Devon Rodriguez and Cory Vaughn, who both return for their second seasons in Southern Maryland. Rodriguez broke the Blue Crabs single season record with a .364 batting average last season. Vaughn was one of just two players for the team last season to post double-digit totals in homeruns and stolen bases. The center-fielder also finished tied for the team-lead in runs scored, and finished second on the team in RBI's and games played.
The pitching staff will be headlined by two returning All-Stars as well, as starter Daryl Thompson and closer Cody Eppley are back for another season. Thompson, the Blue Crabs all-time leader in wins, returns for his seventh season with the team, and is slated as the Opening Day starter for the team. The right-hander moved into the top 10 in Atlantic League history last season in strikeouts and innings pitched. Eppley will make his return as the top man in a solid bullpen for the Blue Crabs. The right-hander is coming off a career year in 2017, in which he posted a personal-best 32 saves and led the Atlantic League in the category.
The host of newcomers to the team are led by MLB veterans Xaiver Paul and Sean O'Sullivan. Paul spent six years at the major league level, appearing the Dodgers, Reds, Pirates, and Diamondbacks. The outfielder appeared in 349 MLB games, including a career-high 128 in 2011. O'Sullivan joins Southern Maryland with seven years of experience in the show. The right-hander appeared in 71 career games, making 56 starts at the highest level.
"I think this is the best group of guys we have put together here in Southern Maryland," said Manager James Frisbie. "There is a lot of talent on this team and I'm continue the winning ways the Blue Crabs have showcased thus far in the franchise's history."
