Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
(Waldorf, MD.) - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (1-0) took the 2018 season opener against the Long Island Ducks (30-39) 3-1, as Daryl Thompson (1-0) became the Blue Crabs all-time leader in wins.
After a 1-2-3 inning from Thompson started the year for Southern Maryland, the offense was able to get going in the bottom half. After Jair Jurrjens (0-1) picked up two quick outs, Ryan Strausborger singled to keep the inning alive for Xavier Paul. The designated hitter followed with a single of his own, setting up a Devon Rodriguez single to plate the first run of the game.
Thompson gave up a lead-off double to start the second, before retiring nine straight Ducks to head to the bottom of the fourth. Frank Martinez picked up a double, scoring on a Jose Gonzalez single. After a Johnny Bladel single moved Gonzalez to third, Joey Wong's infield single plated another run. Edwin Garcia provided the fifth straight hit, scoring Bladel to give the Blue Crabs a 4-0 lead before Jurrjens escaped the inning.
The offense didn't slow down there, as they added two more to the tally in the fifth inning. Rodriguez got it going with a single, coming around to score on a two-out double from Martinez. Gonzalez followed with another RBI single, scoring Martinez for the second time on the night.
The veteran Thompson allowed a solo homerun to Jordany Valdespin in the sixth, just the second hit he allowed on the night. He finished the inning with his seventh strikeout of the night, wrapping up his season debut.
The bullpen took over from there, as Sam Runion, Ryan Chaffee, and Craig Stem all combined to finish off the 6-1 victory for Southern Maryland. The win was the 41st for Thompson as a Blue Crab, passing Gaby Hernandez for the most wins in franchise history.
"I went out and ultimately did what I wanted to do, which is put my team in the best spot to win every night," said Thompson. "I try not to pay attention to numbers or anything, but to become the all-time leader in wins is something special that I take pride in."
