Blue Comes Back from 19 Down to Top Warriors
February 18, 2015 - NBA G League (G League)
Oklahoma City Blue News Release
OKLAHOMA CITY, Feb 17, 2015 - The Oklahoma City Blue opened the second half of its season by overcoming a 19-point deficit to come back and defeat the Santa Cruz Warriors, 103-98, on Tuesday night. The Blue has now won three games this season in which it trailed by 18 or more points.
Marquis Teague shot 10-of-15 to lead the Blue's scoring efforts with 24 points, six assists and three rebounds. Fellow guard Semaj Christon notched 17 points, nine assists, five rebounds and four steals. Talib Zanna recorded his 19th double-double of the year with 17 points and 14 boards while Xavier Alexander scored 21 points off the bench alongside nine rebounds.
Trailing 53-38 at halftime after shooting 12-of-41 in the first two quarters, Oklahoma City outscored the Warriors 38-21 in the third frame by going 14-of-20 from the floor. Seven Blue players scored at least four points in the quarter and the team distributed nine assists, including five dimes from Christon. The Blue used a 12-5 run in the final four minutes of the third to take a 76-74 lead into the final period.
Santa Cruz climbed back to an 89-86 lead with 5:22 remaining in the game, but Oklahoma City responded with a 10-0 run to go ahead by seven. The Warriors pulled to within three with a minute to play but a nine-foot floater from Christon at the 42.4 second mark put OKC back up by two possessions, which they held on to for the remainder of the game.
"One thing we talk about a lot is our pace," said Blue Head Coach Mark Daigneault. "The pace of our offense wasn't very good in the first half, but in the second half it was much better. Part of that comes from getting stops defensively because when you get rebounds or turnovers you can get out on offense and play fast. We were better on both ends in the second half and I think that was why we were able to come back into it."
Oklahoma City (18-15) outrebounded the Warriors 53-42 and held Santa Cruz to just three offensive boards in the second half.
Santa Cruz (19-13) was led by Elliot Williams' triple-double of 30 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists.
The Blue is back in action against divisional foe Texas with a trip to Frisco on Friday night, followed by a second meeting on Sunday at the COX Convention Center. For ticket information to Sunday's 2 p.m. contest, visit OklahomaCityBlue.com.
