Winnipeg Blue Bombers News Release
WINNIPEG, MB - Head Coach Paul LaPolice and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers are thrilled to announce today that Gary Crowton - one of the NCAA's top offensive coaches in the past decade - has been hired as the team's Offensive Coordinator. Crowton also joins Coach LaPolice's staff with experience as an NFL offensive coordinator, and comes to Winnipeg most recently from the University of Maryland where he held the role of Offensive Coordinator.
"I am extremely excited to have Gary join the Blue Bombers coaching staff. Having known each other since my days coaching at the University of New Hampshire, I was always impressed with him as a person and especially as an offensive innovator. His experiences in the spread offense are very similar to type of offenses that are prevalent in the CFL," said Head Coach Paul LaPolice. "He will be a great teacher for our players and his expertise at the NCAA level will be especially valuable for our younger roster."
Crowton joined the University of Maryland after spending the previous four seasons with Louisiana State University (LSU) as offensive coordinator, where he helped the Tigers set 10 school records in 2007, en route to claiming the National Championship. Those records included points in a season (541), points per game (38.6), touchdowns scored (64), total yards (6,152) and first downs (316) among many others. LSU also scored at least 40 points a school-record seven times that season. The Tigers compiled a 40-12 overall mark during Crowton's tenure.
Prior to accepting the job at LSU, Crowton spent two years as the offensive coordinator at Oregon University, transforming the Ducks into one of the top offenses in the nation, and also capturing a PAC 10 championship in 2006.
Crowton has previously held two head coaching stints in the NCAA as well, serving four years as the head man at Brigham Young University (BYU) where he guided the team to a 26-23 record, including a 12-2 mark in his first season which was capped off by an appearance in the Liberty Bowl. In 2001, Crowton's offense was first in the nation in total offense (542 yards/game) and first in scoring (46.7 points/game). His first head coaching gig came at Louisiana Tech from 1996-1998 where he led the Bulldogs to an overall mark of 21-13, which included a 9-2 record in 1997. His final season at Louisiana Tech saw his offense finish first in the nation in passing offence (432 yards/game) and second in total offense (542 yards/game).
In 1999, Crowton was hired as the Offensive Coordinator of the Chicago Bears where he served for two years. In his first season, the offense ranked number three in the NFL in passing yards (258.5 per game) and established a franchise record 4,136 passing yards behind a trio of quarterbacks.
Throughout his coaching career, Crowton has also made stops at Western Illinois (Offensive Coordinator), New Hampshire (Offensive Coordinator), Georgia Tech (Co-Offensive Coordinator) and Boston College, where he served as Quarterbacks Coach under current New York Giants head coach, Tom Coughlin.
