Lexington County Blowfish News Release

The Columbia Blowfish scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to beat the Florence RedWolves 7-6 on Monday night. It is the second time the Blowfish have walked off at Capital City Stadium this season.

With the Blowfish (10-21, 1-2) trailing 6-4 and on the verge of their fourth straight loss, Zach Smith hit his second home run of the day with nobody out to tie the game. With two down and the bases loaded Reggie Weatherford hit a ground ball up the middle to score Rob Harding and take the game on Independence Day.

The RedWolves (16-16, 1-3) struck for a run in the first when Adam Matthews, who was making his Coastal Plain League debut, hit a laser off the left field wall for a double. He later stole third and Joe Jackson's throw rolled into left field allowing Matthews to score.

Smith hit his first home run in the bottom of the first to give the Blowfish the lead. Smith went 3-5 on the day with four RBIs and three runs scored.

The RedWolves tied the game with an RBI groundout by Adam Engel in the third and took the lead in the fifth with a Shane Brown sacrifice fly.

Brison Celek tied the game back up in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI double. Celek went 4-4 on the day and has now collected a hit in 13 of the past 14 games. Later in the frame Greg Harrison hit a line drive to center allowing Tyler Jackson to score the go-ahead run. Celek tried to score on the play as well but was gunned down at the plate by the center fielder Brown.

With two outs in the sixth, Travis Benn hit a ground ball to shortstop. Harding's throw was wide of the bag and Celek caught the ball and turned to tag Benn but dropped the ball. The error allowed Tony Micklon to score the tying run all the way from second.

Alex Brooks (2-1) came on in the eighth and the first batter he faced was Micklon, who drove a pitch over the left field wall for the lead. Shane Basen singled home Joshua Miller, who scored the third unearned run of the game for Florence.

Ruben Tresgallo (0-1) cruised through the eighth and seemed to have the game on lock before Chase Vergason led off the ninth with a single and the Blowfish put on a show of their own before the fans were treated to an Independence Day fireworks show afterward.

The win moves Columbia out of last place in the South division for the second half. They look to carry the momentum from the win Tuesday night in Gastonia before returning home on Wednesday when the RedWolves go back to Capital City Stadium looking to avenge the loss.
