COLUMBIA, SC - The Columbia Blowfish (13-19) needed extra innings, 13 to be exact in order to get the 1-0 win over the Martinsville Mustangs (13-19) at Historic Capitol City Stadium.
Allen Staton (North Greenville) was player of the game as he connected on the first pitch he saw in the bottom of the 13th and launched a solo homerun over the left field wall. Staton also broke up Nick Hedge's(Penn State) no-hitter in the bottom of 5th with a single to left.
The first 12 innings of the ballgame was a pitchers duel as both teams were still scoreless heading into the bottom of the 13th.
Mustangs starting pitcher Nick Hedge (Penn State) threw 9 innings of shutout baseball, allowing only 1 hit, while striking out 6 on 89 pitches in his first appearance of the season.
Mustangs relief pitcher Max Beerman (Villanova) pitched 3 strong innings in relief before he gave up the homerun to Staton in the 13th inning.
The Blowfish used an arsenal of pitchers to beat the Mustangs, Colie Bowers (College of Charleston) started the game throwing 4 strong innings before giving way to Trevor Bradley (Francis Marion), who would throw 5 innings of scoreless relief, and then Ben Schniederjans (Georgia Tech) threw 4 strong innings, while striking out 6 and picking up the win.
The Blowfish next play July 8th against the Wilmington Sharks. First Pitch is set for 7:05 P.M.
