Lexington County Blowfish News Release
COLUMBIA, SC - With a chance to get back within the top-half of the Western Division the Columbia Blowfish (6-11) drop two games to their arch-rivals the Florence RedWolves (11-5) on Father's Day.
Errors proved to be costly to the Blowfish as they committed 5 total in the double header losses to Florence, the 5 errors resulted in 3 total runs for the RedWolves and they caused the Blowfish to lose 3-2 (Game 1) and 2-0 (Game 2) respectively.
The Pitching staff looked to be the best part of the night as game one starter Michael Carpin (Georgia) threw 5 innings, allowing 2 earned runs, and 5 strikeouts on 85 pitches. Stuart Pound (Gray College) came in relief to throw 2 innings of one hit baseball.
Game two starter Denis Buckley (Charleston Southern) started off where the pitchers in game one left off. Buckley threw 5 innings, allowing 1 run off of 2 hits, he struck out 7 in his first start of the season and Michael Trevor Bradley (USC Sumter) struck out 6, in 2 innings pitched, allowing 1 earned run off of 3 hits.
In the first game got on the board first with 3 run 4th inning when Jordan Gore (South Carolina) got on base with a one out walk, it was followed by back-to-back singles by Dean Wilson (Oral Roberts) and Connor Beck (TCU), Tyler Moore (USC-Aiken) would add another single and Gene Cone (South Carolina) would add a double before the inning was over and this is all they would need the rest of the game.
The Blowfish began the 9th inning down by two when Allen Staton (North Greenville) stepped up to bat and blasted single to right field on a 1-2 count, then Chase Shelton (Charleston Southern) stepped into the batters box and blasted a 2-run homerun to right-center field on a full count, but that would be all the Blowfish had in the tank as the next three batters would go down in order.
Game two was a pitchers dual as there was not an earned run allowed by either side until the 6th inning. In the top of the third inning Dean Wilson reached on base with an error by Blowfish second basemen Cody Smith (Spartanburg Methodist), the next batter Colton Konvicka (Mt. Olive) singled and then two batters later Joseph Bialkowski (Georgetown) ground out but Smith was able to score on the putout. The RedWolves would strike again in the top of the 6th inning when Kane Sweeney (Morehead St.) hit a one out single, the next batter Brandon Rawe (Morehead St.) would double to right center to bring Sweeney home.
The Blowfish offense was only able to muster 5 total hits in the second game, and they left 7 players on the base paths.
The RedWolves closer Mike Morrison (Coastal Carolina) picked up saves numbers 5 and 6.
The next home game for the Columbia Blowfish will be a double header against Florence on June 18th.
