Dayton Gems News Release

The Dayton Gems were unable to overcome an early deficit as they were defeated 4-3 by Bloomington on Thursday night.

The PrairieThunder took a 2-1 lead in the closing seconds of the first period and never relinquished the lead for the remainder of the game.

Bloomington was able to take 1-0 in the first period thanks to a goal by Brett Holmberg at the 8:47 mark. Jonathan Ornelas of the Gems was able to tie the game at 1-1 when he scored with 2:11 remaining in the opening period.

It looked as though the period was going to end in a 1-1 tie until Brodie Sheahan slipped a shot past Gems' goaltender Jeff Jakaitis with just 12 seconds remaining in the period to give Bloomington a 2-1 lead going into the break.

The PrairieThunder came out firing in the second period and were rewarded for their effort when Holmberg scored his second goal of the game to give Bloomington a 3-1 lead.

Brandon Naurato did his best to spark a comeback for the Gems. He scored a power play with 6:23 remaining in the second period to cut the PrairieThunder's lead down to one.

After Bloomington's Jon Booras scored a power play goal in the third period to give Bloomington a two score lead, Naurato recorded his second goal of the game to make it 4-3.

But that was all the Gems were able to assemble in the third period as they ended up on the losing end of a 4-3 game.

Dayton was outshot by Bloomington 37-31 on the night. Jakaitis was able to stop 33 of the PrairieThunder's 37 shots.

The Gems will hit the ice again tomorrow night as they take on Evansville at 7:30 p.m. EST at Hara Arena in Dayton.
