Southern Illinois Miners News Release
MARION, Ill. - Will Block's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning scored Landon Camp from third, giving Southern Illinois the walk-off winner, 5-4, Wednesday night. It was Block's second game winning hit of the season. The win put the Miners into a second place tie in the Frontier League West Division with a share of a wild card spot.
Landon Camp led off the ninth inning with a double down the third base line. Will Block followed with the intent of sacrificing Camp over to third, but reliever Jacinto Gonell sailed a pitch over Block's head, advancing Camp to third. Block lifted the very next pitch to left field. Camp tagged from third while left fielder Wayne Bond's throw air-mailed catcher Nick Maragas, and the Miners walked away with their third consecutive victory.
Miners starter Brett Scarpetta worked 6.2 solid innings, allowing four runs on eight hits. Only one of those runs was earned. Scarpetta was chased from the game in the seventh inning when Jodam Rivera doubled in two runs, which cut the Miners lead to 4-3. Ryan Kussmaul entered the game in relief and surrendered a base hit to Drew Saylor. That scored Rivera and tied the game, 4-4.
A couple long balls were the story early for Southern Illinois. Adam Hale's solo shot in the second inning broke a scoreless tie and put the Miners up, 1-0. Jereme Milons had an RBI ground out in the fifth inning, extending the Miners lead to 2-0. Tony Roth followed with a line drive that left the yard in a hurry, giving Southern Illinois the comfortable 4-0 lead.
Three Southern Illinois relievers combined for 2.1 innings of shutout ball. Mike Damchuk earned his third victory of the season, pitching a scoreless ninth inning.
The start of the game was delayed 1 hour and 18 minutes due to rain.
The Miners will go for the sweep against the Crushers and try to extend the winning streak to four on Thursday at Rent One Park. Game time is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Joe Augustine (6-4, 3.22) will get the nod for Southern Illinois, while Lake Erie has not yet announced a starter. It will be Xtreme Theme Thursday presented by KFVS 12 and NFL night at the ballpark.
