Baltimore Blast News Release
Baltimore, MD â The Baltimore Blast lost four players to the St. Louis Steamers in this week's MISL expansion draft. The expansion draft took place Monday afternoon in order to fill the rosters for the expansion St. Louis Steamers and the yet-named Monterrey franchise. The Steamers selected midfielder Craig Scheer in the second-round of the draft and went on to take defender Dewan Bader and midfielders Danny Santoro and Daniel Barber in the third, eighth and 11th rounds, respectively.
"It is unfortunate that we lost these players," General Manager Kevin Healey said. "Each of them played a role in the Blast's success last season. As an organization we will continue to look at player moves that will prepare us for the 2003-04 season."
Scheer, a native of the St. Louis area, played the last two seasons in Baltimore, recording 20 points in 52 games. Bader, a nine-year veteran of the MISL/NPSL, recorded 30 points and 62 blocks in two seasons for the Blast. Santoro, who spent the last five seasons with the Blast, sat out the majority of the 2002-03 season after undergoing knee surgery in January. Santoro was also selected in the 2000 NPSL Dispersal Draft by the Toronto Thunder-Hawks and the Blast made a trade to keep him in Baltimore. Barber played briefly with the Blast during the 2001-02 and 2002-03 seasons, recording 10 points in 25 games.
The 11-round Major Indoor Soccer League Expansion Draft was held Monday, July 21 via conference call. Monterrey had the first four picks in the first round, and selected Martin Dugas (Milwaukee), Armando Valdivia (Dallas), Sinisa Alebic (Milwaukee) and Gary DePalma (Philadelphia), respectively, with the first four picks. Rounds two through 11 consisted of two selections each with Monterrey choosing ahead of St. Louis.
The 2003 MISL Champs are conducting summer soccer camps throughout the summer at various sites in the Baltimore area. The Baltimore Blast Summer Soccer Camps will run until the week of August 25-29.
