Baltimore, MD - In the third matchup of the season between the Baltimore Blast and the Harrisburg Heat, the Heat came out on top 8-6.
The game got off to a very quick start as Elton de Oliveira put the Blast ahead three minutes into the game, from an assist by goalkeeper William Vanzela. Midway through the first quarter, Heat defender William Eskay followed up on Ricardo Carvalho's saved shot and put it past Vanzela to equalize. Only eight seconds later, Jon Orlando would put the Blast ahead again 2-1 from an assist by Jamie Thomas. Eleven seconds later, Carvalho would equalize from a spot kick to make the score 2-2. This would end a goal scoring spell of three goals in only nineteen seconds of game time. Tom Mellor would give the Heat their first lead of the night. Jonatas Melo would tie it back up with a goal of his own; thanks to some fancy footwork from Mohamed N'diaye. Ricardo Carvalho would score with three minutes left to close a goal-packed first quarter with the Heat up 4-3.
Both teams would cool off in the second quarter from their fiery start. Several key saves from both keepers kept the score the same through most of the second quarter. A 3-on-1 opportunity from the Heat was denied by Jon Orlando midway through the second quarter. The first goal of the quarter came from Nelson Santana with 36 seconds remaining, as he took the ball the length of the field and fired a shot past Vanzela . The Blast would respond with 0.6 remaining in the half as Jon Orlando deflects Marco Nascimento's shot. The Heat would go into halftime leading the Blast 5-4.
The third quarter would start just how the second quarter began, with several chances but no goals. Midway through the third quarter, both goalkeepers produced monumental saves that kept the other attack at bay. Jonatas Melo would be issued a red card with several minutes remaining in the third quarter. Nelson Santana would immediately respond with a rocket from outside the arc to extend the Heat's lead to 6-4. Santana would get his hat-trick seconds later with another shot from outside the arc to put the Heat up 7-4 at the end of the third quarter.
The Blast would get a goal back through Elton de Oliveira, who received a perfect pass off the boards from Josh Hughes. The Blast would keep possession through most of the fourth quarter as they patiently built up play waiting for the perfect chance. That chance would fall to Daniel Oliveira, as he weaved around the Heat defense and put his shot past the goalkeeper to cut the Heat lead to one with two minutes remaining. The Blast would make the move to put on a sixth attacker. Matt Perrella would seal the victory with a great save and a massive throw from his own box into the Blast empty net. The Heat would hold out for the rest of regulation to win 8-6.
The Blast were led by Elton de Oliveira and Jon Orlando, both whom scored two goals each. Nelson Santana led the way for the Heat with a hat-trick against his former team. Both goalkeepers were kept busy tonight; each posting double digit saves in the game. Vanzela would record ten saves and an assist, while Heat goalkeeper Perrella would record eleven saves and a goal.
The Blast are back in action on Saturday, February 2nd when they travel to Milwaukee to face the Wave at 7:05 pm EST at the UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena.
