Blades Head Home with Single Point After Wild One in Brandon

December 16, 2018 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Saskatoon Blades News Release

The Saskatoon Blades closed out the first half of the season in dramatic fashion with a 6-5 overtime loss in Brandon to the Wheat Kings. The loss leaves the Blades with a 21-10-4-0 record to hold down 2nd place in the East Division.

HOW IT WENT DOWN

The rematch of Friday night's contest had no shortage of action. The home side opened the scoring with a short-handed marker which sent Teddy Bears flying onto the ice at Westoba Place in Brandon. Chase Wouters (5) and Max Gerlach (18) then answered for the Blades to give Saskatoon a 2-1 lead at the break. The Blades also lead 14-5 on the shot clock after the 1st.

Brandon owned the middle frame scoring twice to regain the lead at 3-2. Dawson Davidson (7) tied the game midway through the period, but again the Wheaties would strike with another pair of goals. Brandon took a 5-3 lead into the 2nd intermission and outshot Saskatoon 17-10 in the period. It was a hostile affair as the two rivals combined for 40 penalty minutes in the second period alone. Still, neither team managed to execute on the power play.

The Blades took the momentum back in the 3rd period and outshot the Wheat Kings 13-7 in the final 20. Max Gerlach (19) scored his 2nd goal of the night to get Saskatoon within one. Then, Tristen Robins (6)-- playing his first WHL game in his home province-- tied the game at 5-5 just 85 seconds after Gerlach's goal.

Fellow Manitoban Riley McKay was awarded penalty shot in overtime but failed to convert. Instead, Brandon captain Stelio Mattheos completed his hat-trick with the overtime winner 2:25 into the extra frame.

Saskatoon outshot Brandon 40-31 in the game and while they lost in overtime, they do extend their point streak to five games (4-0-1-0).
