Saskatoon Blades News Release
SWIFT CURRENT, SK - "We had a lot of good meetings after the last game and I think guy's challenged each other. We know we're better than we showed and you can't play this game without the passion and desire," says a much happier Bob Woods after ending the teams four game losing streak agains the Broncos.
The Broncos opened things up as Max Lajoie's pass rims around the boards and Jake DeBrusk with perfect timing off the bench lead to a break away and dekes out Brock Hamm for his 7th to put them up 1-0 Just 2:57 in the first period.
A turn over in the Blades zone by Draude leads to a Broncos opportunity with a mad scramble in front and the puck eventually going to Cavin Leth on the door step to extend the Bronco lead to 2-0 8:54 in the first.
The Blades would get going as Nick Zajac slap shot from the circles gets tipped by Cameron Hebig for his 11th of the year to cut the lead to 2-1 for the Broncos.
In the second, the Blades showed a lot more energy after the first goal and got some good all around team effort going. Such as a nice forced turnover by Josh Uhrich behind the net throws it in front to Mason McCarty who drives to the net to tie the game 2-2 just over six minutes in the second.
During some offsetting minors, the Blades also drew a cross checking penalty which brought the Blades to the power-play. The Blades effort was not questioned during that initial power play as they were able to hold the zone for Cameron Hebig who drove the puck to net but ended up giving it to Wyatt Sloboshan for his fifth of the season to give the Blades their first lead in the hockey game.
More hard work from the Blades would transfer over into the third. Off a Soshnin face-off win the puck goes back to the point, the shot is stopped but Mason McCarty finds it and beats Bow five hole for his second of the game with just over 5 minutes to go in the 3rd to make it 4-2 Blades. "The first one was Uhrich forechecking, he won the puck battle to make the defenseman make an error and I was able to get it in somehow and the second one was a good face off win by Soshnin with again Uhrich and Soshnin in front and I was just able to get a rebound and it went in," says McCarty describing both his goals tonight.
Things went from good to bad for the boys in blue as several breakdowns occurred late in the third. One being a turnover at the blue line by Wheaton lead to Broncos leading scorer Jon Martin on a breakaway that beats Hamm low glove with four minutes left to play.
With Bow at the bench and six attackers for the Broncos, the Blades couldn't clear it in their zone leading to traffic at the net and Jake DeBrusk with a no look backhand pass to Kaden Elder all alone at the side of the net with 43 seconds left in the game to tie the game up at 4.
In Overtime, the Blades get on the rush with Ryan Graham finding Wyatt Sloboshan who fans on the first try but converts again on the second opportunity to end the Blades four game losing streak. "They were running around in their zone and with a couple of good moves I was in the right place at the right time and would have cried myself to sleep if I missed that second one in because it was a nice pass from Graham," added Sloboshan describing the OT winner.
"We let it slip away at the end there, a tough break for Wheaton and then we couldn't burry it on the tying goal but the resiliency was there and we got the win and that's the most important thing," added Bob Woods on the tough breaks in the third but overall coming out on top.
The Blades however will have to put this game behind them quickly as they get ready to face the Edmonton Oil Kings. A team that is slowly creeping in them in the standings and look to take over their spot in the Wildcard standings.
Puck drop tomorrow at 7 p.m. on Star Wars Night at SaskTel Centre.
