Fresno Falcons News Release

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Falcons gave up two goals in the third period to San Diego's Jamie Black as they suffered a 2-1 loss to the San Diego Gulls on Friday at Selland Arena in front of a crowd of 6,488.

Neither club found the back of the net in the first period despite the Gulls owning an 11-6 shot advantage through the first 20 minutes. Six minutes into the second period San Diego took two bench minors to give Fresno a full two minutes with a two-man advantage. Kris Porter cashed in the opportunity for the Falcons with his 23rd of the year from Jason McBain and Jason Weaver at 7:02.

Fresno carried their 1-0 lead into the third before Black tallied his first of the night at 3:29 just after a San Diego power play expired. The Falcons killed off the Gulls' first eight power play chances before yielding the game-winner while a man down. Black notched the go-ahead power play goal at 11:21 of the final frame following a mad scramble in front of the net after his teammate Kevin Grant ripped a slapshot squarely off the right post.

Skating short-handed yet again in the final minute, Fresno was able to pull goaltender Mark Gowan to create a five-on-five situation but never tallied the equalizer.

The loss drops the Falcons to 27-18-5 as they lose ground in the standings to both the Gulls and the Bakersfield Condors, who beat the Long Beach Ice Dogs earlier in the evening, 6-2.

The club now embarks on the longest road trip in their history beginning tomorrow night with the second half of a home-and-home with the Gulls in San Diego. The 11-game trip takes them to every city in the league over the course of 16 days. Tomorrow's game can be heard live on 103.1 FM, The Mountain Cat, beginning at 6:50 p.m. with the Mail Boxes, Etc. Pre-game Show.
