Black Bears Strong Play Completes Sweep against the Knights

September 28, 2019 - North American Hockey League (NAHL) - Maryland Black Bears News Release

ODENTON, MD - The Maryland Black Bears were victorious over the WBS-Knights, 5-2 Saturday afternoon. The victory gave the Black Bears a weekend sweep of the Knights, four points and propelled them back to an even .500 for the season.

Despite being outshot early in the first period, the Black Bears were able to jump out to a 1-0 lead. Jackson Sterrett, who had a spectacular game Friday night with two goals and two assists, had the first shot and goal for Maryland. Black Bears Goalie, Cooper Black stood strong and batted away each shot from the Knights. The offensive push toward the end gave Maryland an 11-10 shot advantage by the end of the period.

The WBS Knights responded well and composed a strong comeback back during the second period. Lincoln Hatten scored with an assist from Nikita Asylaev shortly after the five-minute mark. Minutes later, Spencer Kring of the Knights got the best of Cooper Black with an assist from Lincoln Hatten on a power-play goal. Maryland Black Bears Defenseman, Aidan McDowell halted the comeback effort with a goal with assists from Ethan Heidepriem and Jackson Sterrett.

The majority of the third period was a stalemate between the two teams until Brayden Stannard had an unassisted goal 17 minutes in. Running out of time, the Knights opted to pull their goal in hopes of an equalizer, yet Black Bears Forward Max Borst denied the effort. The Black Bears representative for the 2019 Junior Club World Cup on Team NAHL converted the empty net opportunity and gave the Black Bears a 4-2 lead. Less than a minute later, Luke Mountain put all hopes away for the Knights with another open-net goal with an assist from Brayden Stannard.

This weekend was some of the best hockey the Maryland Black Bears have played in their franchise's short history. Friday's game showed glimpses of Maryland domination, while Saturday's game the Black Bears battled back from a 2-1 deficit to complete their first sweep of the year. The players are meshing very well and seem to be getting increasingly comfortable playing with each other as they continue on into the season. This is a perseverant bunch and it is evident the team has the potential to be something special.

Next week, the Black Bears will have their bye and then come back home the following week to face the Johnstown Tomahawks for a weekend series in the Den (Piney Orchard Ice Arena). They will play the Tomahawks on Friday, October 11th at 7:00 PM and then Saturday, October 12th, at 7:45 PM.
