Amarillo Bulls News Release
Amarillo, TX - Matt Allen's two goal night led the way as the Amarillo Bulls outlasted the Shreveport Mudbugs in a back-and-forth contest to win 4-2 on Saturday Night.
The victory comes on the heels of a heartbreaking shootout loss for the Bulls during Friday night's home opener.
The first period began the way that it had during the first game of the two-game set, scoreless, as the two teams were more acquainted with one another, leading to a more subdued opening 20 minutes.
With the game scoreless into the second period, the Mudbugs would strike first when Sam Miller netted the opener late into the second frame. The lead was short-lived, as Bulls forward Aaron White stayed with a bobbling puck before tucking it home just 28 seconds later to tie the game at 1-1.
Later in the second, Matt Allen gave the Bulls the lead when he worked his way into the slot and gave Amarillo the 2-1 lead into the second intermission.
Just under seven minutes into the third, the Mudbugs answered when Dawson Sciarrino took a deflected pass for a breakaway and tied the game at 2-2.
The Bulls would once again celebrate taking the lead when Allen buried his second goal of the game with six minutes to go in regulation.
"I trust Matt," said Bulls Coach Rocky Russo. "I trust him in those situations, and he is the player who will step up."
Niclas Puikkonen would cap off the scoring for the Bulls when he slid home the empty net goal to secure a 4-2 victory for Amarillo.
Bulls forward Jordan Venegoni added to his impressive start to the season with an assist on Allen's second goal, bring his point streak to four consecutive games.
Max Gutjahr, the Bulls goaltender continued his ways in net, improving his record to 2-0 and stopping 21 of 23 Shreveport shots.
The Bulls will resume action on Thursday in Topeka, when they take on the South Division leading Pilots in a three game road stand. The action will begin at 10:30 AM CST on Thursday morning and can be heard on 107.1 Nash Icon and seen on HockeyTV.
