Gwinnett Stripers News Release
The Lead: The Buffalo Bisons beat the Gwinnett Braves 5-4 on Wednesday night at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, GA, to take a 2-1 edge in the current series. The G-Braves (33-40) stayed close the first half of the contest, but the homer-happy Bisons (38-35) used power to pace them to victory. Gwinnett drops to 10.5 games back in 3rd place in the International League South, trailing division leader Durham. Buffalo is 3.5 games behind Syracuse in 3rd place in the North Division.
It Was Over When: G-Braves starting pitcher Todd Redmond gave up two HR in three batters in a tie game in the 6th inning - digging the team a hole they couldn't climb out of.
Braves Beat:
On the Mound: RHP Redmond (7-7), went 6.0 IP and allowed 5 R/ER on 7 hits. It's the second time in his last three starts he's yielded 5 R, after he allowed just 2 R total in the three starts prior to this current stretch. RHP Craig Kimbrel went 1 scoreless inning in his return to Gwinnett since coming back from Atlanta one day ago.
At the plate: Right fielder Mitch Jones went 2-for-4 with his team-leading 13th home run of the year, finishing with 2 RBI. First baseman Freddie Freeman went 3-for-4 with an RBI, tying Wes Timmons for the season's longest hitting streak at 12 games. Matt Young, playing second base, went 3-for-4 with 3 runes scored.
The opposition:
On the Mound: Buffalo starter, RHP Ramon Ortiz, was signed by the New York Mets to a Minor League contract today and put in 4.0 IP. He yielded 7 hits but just 2 R/ER. RHP Bobby Livingston (3-7) went 3.0 IP in relief, allowing 2 R/ER and striking out 4 batters to earn the win.
At the plate: Left fielder Lucas Duda went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI, including his first Triple-A home run. Former Mets and Marlins first baseman Mike Jacobs went 2-for-4 with a HR and a pair of RBI.
On Deck: Gwinnett wraps up their four game series against the Bisons (New York Mets) Thursday in Buffalo's only visit to Coolray Field this season. First pitch for the final game is set for 7:05 p.m. The G-Braves will send RHP Jair Jurrjens (0-1, 5.14 ERA) to the hill in his third MLB rehab start, going against RHP Dillon Gee (6-4, 4.72 ERA) for the Bisons. The game will be broadcast on TV on CSS and WDUN-550 AM will have the radio call. Tomorrow is also $3 Thursday, where fans can buy featured sandwiches, snacks, soft drinks and beer from the $3 Thursday cart behind Section 116 this Thursday and every Thursday for the rest of the season.
