Birmingham Barons News Release
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - A four-run seventh and quality spot-start from hurler Tim Crabbe led the Barons to a 5-3 victory over the Biscuits Sunday night at Riverwalk Stadium. Birmingham pulled its overall record to .500 (69-69) and tied the series with Montgomery 2-2 going into Monday's season finale.
Crabbe threw five strong innings, yielding just three hits and one run. The right-hander fanned eight Biscuits' hitters, totaling a season-high. His previous strikeout high was five July 18 in a start against Pensacola. Despite the performance, Crabbe left the game trailing 1-0, but an offensive surge in the sixth and seventh innings got the hurler off the hook.
Montgomery starter Taylor Gurrieri threw just three innings before giving way to the bullpen. Ryne Stanek allowed the game-tying run, but it was Kyle McPherson (0-2, 7.48 ERA) who would take the loss and allow four Birmingham runs on four hits.
Birmingham manufactured the game's tying run in the sixth with a small-ball approach. A Chris Jacobs single and Ryan Leonards sacrifice bunt put a runner in scoring position. Jacobs scored on a groundout off the bat of outfielder Jacob May.
Brian Fletcher began the Barons' go-ahead attack with a double in the seventh. Along with Danny Hayes aboard with a walk, that set up a Marcus Lemon two-RBI triple, putting Birmingham out in front 3-1. Jacobs followed suit and tripled home Lemon, extending the lead to 4-1. Birmingham's final run scored with Leonards plating Jacobs with a sac fly.
Robinson Leyer (3-1, 4.93 ERA) earned the win, tossing three scoreless innings of no-hit baseball in relief, but the victory fell into jeopardy in the final inning.
With right-hander Zach Isler on the mound, Montgomery struck for two runs on a two-run Dayron Varona home run, but the sinker-baller was able to coax a lineout for the final out from Jake Bauers to close out the game.
ON DECK
Right-hander Myles Jaye (12-8, 3.24 ERA) goes for his league-leading 13th win of the year in the Barons' final game of the 2015 season. Montgomery is set to counter with left-hander Chris Kirsch (2-4, 6.20 ERA).
