Montgomery Biscuits News Release
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - It took just two hours and two minutes, but the Biscuits (3-1) snapped a nine-game losing streak against their former North Division rivals, and took down the Tennessee Smokies (2-2), 5-1, on Tuesday night at Riverwalk Stadium.
Sean Hunley made his first start for the Biscuits since Game 2 of the 2022 South Division Championship Series, and the right-hander worked a one-two-three top of the first, striking out a pair.
Porter Hodge (0-1) got the ball on the other side for Tennessee, and the Smokies righty retired the Biscuits' side in order with a strikeout in the bottom of the first.
After Hunley worked a scoreless top of the second, Tristan Peters led off the bottom of the second with a single. Logan Driscoll singled in the next at-bat, moving Peters to third. Austin Shenton then struck out on a pitch in the dirt that got away from Tennessee catcher Pablo Aliendo, allowing Peters to score the game's first run. Heriberto Hernandez then grounded an RBI-single into right field and doubled the Biscuits lead to 2-0.
Chase Strumph clubbed an RBI-double to right field in the top of the third to cut the deficit in half at 2-1. The Biscuits responded in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI-single by Driscoll and an RBI-fielder's choice by Shenton to make it a 4-1 ballgame.
John Doxakis entered the game in relief of Hunley and fired a scoreless top of the fifth before the Biscuits added a fifth run on an Aliendo throwing error to make it 5-1 in the bottom of the fifth.
Doxakis continued to keep the Smokies off the board in the sixth and seventh, and got an incredible 8-5 put-out from Greg Jones, who nailed Aliendo with a brilliant throw to third from center field with the catcher trying to stretch a double into a triple. Graham Spraker made his Biscuits debut and spun a scoreless eighth, striking out a pair, and then Joe LaSorsa worked a one-two-three ninth to seal the victory.
The Biscuits stole four more bases on Tuesday night, and now have 16 through the first four games of the season. Montgomery has not been caught stealing yet.
The Biscuits will try to improve to 4-1 on Wednesday when Logan Workman is scheduled to make his Double-A debut against Daniel Palencia on Military Wednesday presented by WOW! at 6:35 PM.
The rest of the six-game series will include Opening Week T-Shirt Giveaway & Thirsty Thursday on Thursday, April 13; Teacher Appreciation Night presented by Whataburger on Friday, April 14; Jackie Robinson Day & The Nine Night & MAX Fireworks on Saturday, April 15; and Lil' Crumbs T-Shirt Giveaway presented by AKD on Sunday, April 16.
