June 22, 2015 - Southern League (SL1)
Montgomery Biscuits News Release

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Montgomery Biscuits have announced the six contestants for the Southern League Alfa Home Run Derby will be Johnny Field Jr. (Montgomery), Nick Ramirez (Biloxi), Adam Brett Walker (Chattanooga), Kyle Waldrop (Pensacola), Zack Cox (Jacksonville) and Willson Contreras (Tennessee) on Tuesday at Riverwalk Stadium.

The Home Run Derby features baseball's top test of power. Each contestant will compete against one another to see who can hit the most home runs in a two round tournament.

Field, 23, has put up league leading numbers in the encore to his Rays Minor League Player of the Year season in 2014. As a Biscuits everyday outfielder, Field is fifth in the league in home runs with eleven and second in the league in RBI with 49.

Ramirez, 25, has finished with at least 16 home runs in each of the last three seasons. Last year in the Southern League, he finished with 19 as a Huntsville Star and is on pace to again finish close to 20 home runs with Biloxi.

Brett Walker, 23, leads the league with 19 home runs while the next closest player only has 13. The Lookouts' outfielder hit a combined 52 home runs in the last two seasons and is touted as having some of the best power in the Southern League.

Waldrop, 23, is a top-15 prospect for the Cincinnati Reds. He finished the 2013 season with 21 home runs and then 14 last year in his time split between the California League and the Southern League with Pensacola.

Cox, 26, is a former first round pick by the St. Louis Cardinals who signed for over $3 million. He has been one of the top hitters in the Southern League this year boasting a .308 batting average with Jacksonville, which is top-ten in the league.

Contreras, 23, has been a force in the middle of arguably the top lineup in the league in the Tennessee Smokies. The catcher/DH out of Venezuela has hit .332 with five home runs to be selected as the North's starting catcher and a home run derby participant.

All six participants will hit in the first round. Each hitter will have seven outs to hit as many home runs as possible. An "out" constitutes as anything that is not a home run after a swing. After the first round has concluded, the two hitters with the most home runs will advance to the championship round. In the final round, each hitter will have five outs to hit as many home runs as possible. The winner will be the player to hit the most home runs in the championship round only.

During the final out for each hitter in every round, a special Alfa Red Ball will be introduced into the competition. Any Alfa Red Ball that is hit for a home run will result in Alfa Insurance donating $100 to the River Region United Way.

The Alfa Home Run Derby is scheduled to begin at 6:00pm with gates opening to the public at 5:00pm. The Southern League All-Star Game presented by Wind Creek Hospitality will be shortly after the conclusion of the Alfa Home Run Derby.

Tickets for the Home Run Derby and Southern League All-Star Game are $15 for general admission and $22 for reserved seating. Tickets can be purchased at biscuitsbaseball.com or by calling 334-323-2255.
