Southern League Names Pitcher and Player of the Week
June 22, 2015 - Southern League (SL1) News Release
MARIETTA, GA - The Southern League of Professional Baseball Clubs announces its Pitcher and Player of the Week for June 15 through 21. Lefthander Brent Suter of the Biloxi Shuckers was selected as the Pitcher of the Week while Chattanooga Lookouts OF Max Kepler earned Player of the Week honors.
Over two starts, Suter tossed 13 innings and struck out 12 batters, both numbers good for tops in the league. The Cincinnati, Ohio native began the week on June 15 in a 2-1 win at Mississippi. Earning his fourth win of the season, Suter fired six shutout innings, allowing just three hits, while fanning five Braves batters. The southpaw made his second start in the Shuckers 1-0 win over Montgomery on June 20. Over seven more shutout frames, Suter struck out seven batters, giving up just five base hits. While he was unable to record the win, his outstanding effort kept Biloxi close enough to take the eventual one-run victory in the 15th inning. This is the Harvard product's second career weekly honor after the Florida State League selected him on July 1, 2013.
Southern League All-Star Max Kepler produced a monster week, either leading or tied at the top of the League leader board with a .636 batting average, six runs, 14 hits, 22 total bases, four triples, a .704 on-base percentage, a 1.000 slugging percentage and OPS of 1.704. Adding three stolen bases, four walks and four RBIs, the Berlin, Germany native paced the Lookouts to a 5-1 record over the week, including the North Division's first half title-clinching win over Jacksonville on June 18. In the 8-6 victory of the Suns, Kepler went 3-for-4 with two triples, two runs, and an RBI. His most impressive performances, though, came in back-to-back outings when he began the week with two consecutive four-hit games. Furthermore, the outfielder recorded four total multi-hit efforts in just six games. This is his second Southern League Player of the Week award this season after he was honored on May 25.
