Birmingham Barons News Release

Following Thirsty Thursday's blowout victory, Birmingham turned to the opener to keep the wins rolling. However, in their way stood the Los Angeles Angels' no. 1 overall prospect, Sam Bachman. Although the Pandas' former first-round missed spring training due to injury, he appeared in mid-season form on Friday night. Granted, his first inning arrived with a bit of drama due to two bloop singles leading to a bases-loaded scenario for Birmingham. However, Rocket City escaped unharmed.

Conversely, Brian Glowicki's opener position worked as intended. After one inning, Jason Bilous replaced Glowicki and seemed to turn a corner from his prior outings. In his first frame, Bilous went 1-2-3, but from there, his outing began to crumble slowly but surely. During his second inning, the righty faced two on and two out, albeit there should have been three down since one runner reached via dropped third strike. Alas, the inning ended with an RBI single to left field and a runner caught in between bases.

Sam Bachman's day consisted of attacking hitters in whatever way possible but, in doing so, resulted in a handful of bloop singles for the Barons. Nevertheless, Bachman finished with 4.0 IP, 4 H, 2 BB, and 3 SO. Similarly, Bilous only lasted four innings, but his departure left behind severe consequences. Edgar Navarro entered, and despite surrendering two back-blowing hits, all the runs fell onto Bilous's final line of 4.0 IP, 8 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 2 BB, and 4 SO.

Beyond that, the ballgame went relatively quietly for both sides. Birmingham did avoid the shutout, though, thanks to solo home runs from Lenyn Sosa and Yoelqui Céspedes. Sosa continues slugging the ball like no other, with him now sitting at nine long balls on the season. In the end, the Barons fell for the tenth time this season to the Pandas, but this time by a score of 8-2.
