Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

SALISBURY, MD - For the second time this week, the Delmarva Shorebirds blew a ninth inning lead only to win it in the tenth in an 8-7 victory over the Salem Red Sox on Friday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.

The Shorebirds (24-54, 3-10) managed to even the series at two games apiece with the victory while the Red Sox (42-37, 7-6) saw their ninth inning rally rendered meaningless in the defeat.

Delmarva started the scoring in the contest in the third when Elio Prado was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it 1-0.

Bryan Gonzalez vaulted the Red Sox ahead with a three-run homer in the fourth, his first long ball of the season.

Delmarva whittled the deficit to 3-2 with a Heston Kjerstad RBI single in the fifth, setting the stage for a huge seventh inning rally.

With one away in the seventh, the Shorebirds drew five straight walks, with Trendon Craig's bases loaded free pass tying the game and Frederick Bencosme's walk giving the 'Birds the lead. Noelberth Romero then ripped a two-run double and Stiven Acevedo then drove in a run with a groundout to give the 'Birds a 7-3 lead.

Salem erupted for four runs in the ninth to tie the game. The Red Sox loaded the bases with one away and got an RBI single from Blaze Jordan, a run-scoring passed ball, and then an RBI single from Tyler Miller with an ensuing error allowing the game-tying run to score.

With the Shorebirds going down scoreless in their half of the ninth, the game went to extra innings. Salem failed to push home a run in the top of the tenth, giving the Shorebirds a perfect opportunity for another walk-off win.

Acevedo started the inning out at second for Delmarva and after back-to-back walks, the bases became loaded for Luis Valdez with nobody out. Valdez worked a third straight walk, forcing home Acevedo, and winning the game for the Shorebirds 8-7.

Joel Benitez (3-0) collected the win for the Shorebirds with 1.1 innings of scoreless no-hit relief, striking out one.

Luis Guerrero (1-3) suffered his second loss of the week for the Red Sox, working an inning-plus, striking out three and walking three while allowing an unearned run.

The Shorebirds continue their six-game series with the Red Sox on Saturday, July 9 at Perdue Stadium. Ryan Long (2-4, 4.00) is slated to start for the Shorebirds while Salem tabs Juan Daniel Encarnacion (5-4, 4.91). First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. with pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on theshorebirds.com and MiLB.TV with Sam Jellinek on the call.
