FIREFLIES SUSPENDED IN FIFTH WITH PELICANS: The Fireflies and Pelicans game was suspended due to inclement weather in the top of the fifth inning Thursday night at Segra Park. The game will resume tomorrow at 4:30 pm at Segra Park. Gates for the contest will open at 4:15 pm. It will be made up as a doubleheader with the second game going seven innings. The t-shirt giveaway will be given away prior to the second game. Prior to the tarp coming on the field, the Fireflies trailed the Pelicans 4-0 with two outs in the top of the fifth. Myrtle Beach jumped on the board in the top of the first, when Josue Huma led the inning off with a double and scored on a Kevin Made single.
NO QUIT IN QUINTANA: Columbia's first baseman has been on an absolute tear, as he's hit in a 2022 Fireflies-best eight-consecutive games. During his streak, Guillermo Quintana is 12-31 over the stretch (.387) and has driven in seven RBI. This is the fourth time that a Fireflies player has had a hitting streak of six or more games this season. Quintana has accomplished the feat twice and River Town has also done it two times. Raphael Gladu has the longest hitting streak in franchise history, a 23-game streak from May 9-June 9, 2018.
FRESH PAIR OF JEAN: Columbia's outfielder hasn't been with the Fireflies long. He has played 14 games in 2022 in the neon and navy. In that time though, he has amassed a .283 batting average and has slotted into the lead-off role for Columbia. In the second-half of that time, he has been unbeatable. He is currently riding the Fireflies sixth hitting streak of six games or more this season, going 10-28 (.357) since game two of June 29's doubleheader with the Augusta GreenJackets. He has added one homer and three RBI on the stretch.
NEW YEAR, NEW ME: The second half of the season started last Thursday, which reset each team's record to 0-0. The Fireflies finished the first half (66 games) 28 games back of Myrtle Beach, who had the best record in Minor League Baseball. After starting the second-half 9-2, the Fireflies are in first place and possess a magic number of 53 to clinch the first playoff berth in franchise history.
MAKING MY WAY DOWN TOWN: Fireflies outfielder River Town is on a roll. With his two-run homer in the third inning Wednesday, Town reached base safely in his 21st-consecutive game, which is the longest active streak in Class-A baseball. He is tied for the 11th-longest active streak in Minor League Baseball. Jake Cave has reached safely in 48 games dating back to May 3. The longest on-base streak in A-ball this season belonged to Denzel Clarke of the Stockton Ports. The outfielder reached safely in 37 games from April 14-June 11. To crack the top-10 list in 2022, Town needs to reach safely in 25-straight games. The longest franchise on-base streak belongs to Jeremy Vasquez who reached safely in 28-consecutive games from April 5-May 6, 2018.
PANZINI POPS: When Shane Panzini starts a game, the Fireflies have had a lot of success. The Fireflies have their best record when the New Jersey native starts a game this season, a 5-2 record.
THIS WEEK'S JERSEY AUCTION: The Fireflies will be wearing special military jerseys both tonight and Thursday night for Military Appreciation night. The proceeds from the jerseys will go to the non-profit Folds of Honor that helps provide for families of fallen or disabled vets.
