Augusta GreenJackets News Release
CHARLESTON, SC: A nine-game losing streak came to end for the Augusta GreenJackets (3-10) on Friday night as they fended off the Charleston Riverdogs (6-7) with a 6-2 victory.
The game was dominated by pitching in the opening half of the ballgame as Luis Vargas and JJ Goss traded scoreless innings through the first four frames.
In the fifth, the GreenJackets broke the stalemate with a two-out, RBI single by Eliezel Stevens to score Braulio Vasquez and make it 1-0 Augusta.
After another scoreless inning by Vargas in the bottom half, the GreenJackets broke out for their best inning of the week by scoring five times, starting with a three-run bomb by Brandon Parker to push the lead to 4-0. The inning would continue as Braulio Vasquez singled into centerfield to score Kadon Morton with ease and make it 5-0. Eliezel Stevens stayed hot in the sixth with another RBI single to bring in Connor Blair and extend the advantage to 6-0 to cap off the inning.
Charleston came back with a threat of their own in the next half inning as they scored on a base-hit by Carson Williams to pull the RiverDogs within five at 6-1. They would load the bases with two-outs, but Tyler Owens would leave them all out there as he got Nick Schnell to fly out to left to retire the side.
Owens came in for Luis Vargas who spun a gem on the mound dealing 5.2 innings with a career-high 10 strikeouts on just 3 hits and a walk as just 1 run scored on him.
Owens would hold the lead for Augusta by pitching a scoreless seventh and he got the first two out of the eight before Rob Griswold entered for him. Griswold finished the eighth by creating a groundout right back to him on the mound to take care of Willy Vasquez and send the game to the ninth with the GreenJackets still ahead 6-1.
In the ninth, the RiverDogs put up one final threat as they scored on an RBI single by Logan Allen to make it 6-2. With the tying run on deck, Griswold got Alejandro Pie to roll one back to him on the mound to finish off Augusta's first victory since June 26 as they held on for the 6-2 win.
Luis Vargas (3-4) earned the victory for Augusta while JJ Goss (0-5) took the loss for Charleston.
Brandon Parker had an outstanding night offensively for Augusta as he finished with a career-high four hits with one being his three-home homer in the sixth. Eliezel Stevens picked up his third multi-hit game in four starts while also picking up RBIs on each of his hits. Braulio Vasquez also made it consecutive nights with multiple knocks, finishing 2/4 with a run and an RBI.
The GreenJackets look to get a winning streak started on Saturday night as they send left-hander Sam Strickland to the mound to face Ben Peoples of the RiverDogs. First pitch from Charleston is slated for 6:05 pm.
