ST. PAUL, MINN. - The Sioux Falls Canaries entered St. Paul on Friday needing a strong performance to bolster their playoff push. The Birds got that and more.
The Canaries (27-23) knocked off the St. Paul Saints (25-26) for a tense 3-2 win Sunday evening, completing a three-game road sweep.
The win solidifies the Birds' standing in second place in the American Association, expanding the gap between them and the third-place teams to 2.5 games.
Tyler Danish earned the win for the Birds, throwing 6 innings of one-run ball. Birds center fielder Logan Landon collected three hits, extending his league-best hitting streak to 18 games.
The Birds jumped out to an early lead in the first inning off St. Paul starter Matt Solter. Landon singled to start the inning off, and Damek Tomscha hammered an RBI double to left field to bring Landon home.
St. Paul tied the score in the bottom of the second on an John Silviano RBI single, but an outfield assist from Mike Hart helped the Canaries avoid further damage.
The Birds took the lead for good in the top of the fourth. Tomscha led off the inning with another double, and an infield hit from Alay Lago made it first and third with none out. Jabari Henry hit a sacrifice fly to score Tomscha and make it 3-1 before a double play ended the inning.
Danish threw 94 pitches in his effort, allowing five hits and three walks while striking out three. The Birds have won all five games he has started this year.
Solter also exited after six, allowing two runs on eight hits with one walk and six strikeouts.
The Birds took a 3-1 lead in the seventh off Saints reliever Aaron Brown. A pair of singles from Grant Kay and Logan Landon made it first and third with none out. Andrew Ely hit a ground ball to third for a fielder's choice, allowing Kay to score.
Nicco Blank pitched the seventh for the Canaries, allowing one run on a Mikey Reynolds RBI double.
Kevin Folman threw a dominant eighth inning for the birds, retiring the 3-4-5 hitters in St. Paul's lineup in order with two strikeouts. Keaton Steele threw a perfect ninth to earn the save.

The Birds have Monday off, then head to Fargo for three-game series against the red-hawks Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. First pitch Tuesday night is scheduled for 7:02 p.m. Birds fans can listen to the game at sfcanaries.com.
