Birds sweep bid overcome in 10-7 loss

St. Paul, MN - The Sioux Falls Canaries (11-10) were overcome by a late rally as the St. Paul Saints (10-12) prevented a sweep with a 10-7 win on Saturday night.

The Canaries opened the scoring in the third inning. Anthony Monegan led off with a single and Ralph Santana followed with a bunt single to put runners on first and second. Chad Hermansen followed with a double, extending his current hitting streak to eight games and scoring Monegan for the game's first run. Abner Arroyo singled to score Santnan, and Bubba Smith hit a sacrifice fly to score Hermansen. After two and a half innings, the Canaries were in front 3-0.

In the bottom of the third inning, the Saints got on the board. Nick Gretz singled to score Josh Renick, and Brian Sprout singled to score Adam Olow. The pair of runs cut the Canaries lead to one run, 3-2.

The Birds exploded for four runs in the fifth inning. Chad Hermansen doubled and Abner Arroyo was intentionally walked to put two on. Bubba Smith singled to score Hermansen from second for a 4-2 lead. Dennis Anderson continued the rally with a single of his own. Anderson's base knock scored Arroyo for a 5-2 lead. John Schmitz capped the rally off with a double to plate both Smith and Anderson, giving the Canaries a 7-2 lead.

St. Paul scored twice in the bottom of the fifth. Pat Scalabrini singled to score Nick Gretz and Jeremy Frost hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Brian Sprout. After five innings the Canaries led by three, 7-4.

Jeremy Frost hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning. Frost's fifth home run of the season tied the game, 7-7. Rob Fischer followed with a walk. Fischer moved to third on a single by Josh Renick. With runners on the corners and one out, Chaz Lytle hit a groundball to shortstop. Angelo Fermin flipped the ball to Ralph Santana for the out at second, but Santana dropped the ball in trying to turn the double play. Fischer scored on the play and put the Saints ahead 8-7. An errant pickoff attempt by Lenny Bays allowed Lytle to score from first base for a 9-7 lead.

The Saints got an insurance run in the eighth inning. Brian Buchanan hit his fifth home run of the year to give St. Paul a 10-7 lead. The home run came off Jason Cierlik, and was Buchanan's first of the season off a left-handed pitcher.

The Canaries loaded the bases in the ninth inning, but Matt Hammons kept them from scoring to pick up his 17th save of the season. Matt Petrusek (1-3) suffered the loss for the Canaries. Brian Whinnery (1-0) got the win in his first professional appearance.
