Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, MD -The Delmarva Shorebird opened their series with the Fredericksburg Nationals with a resounding 10-0 win on Tuesday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
Coming off their first series loss of the season, the Shorebirds (26-15) struck first against the Nationals (13-30) in the bottom of the first inning.
Mason Janvrin smashed a grounder to the shortstop that couldn't be handled to start the inning. Janvrin then stole second and was followed by a Darell Hernaiz walk with an ensuing wild pitch moving the runners to second and third. Hudson Haskin then struck out on a pitch in the dirt with the ensuing dropped third strike resulting in a throwing error allowing Haskin to reach with Janvrin scoring on the play while Hernaiz raced for third. After Haskin was thrown out at second trying to steal, TT Bowens bounced out to second, allowing Hernaiz to score to make it 2-0 Delmarva.
The score line stayed that way until the sixth. Janvrin walked to start the frame before swiping second. Hernaiz then brought Janvrin in with a single to shallow center. Hudson Haskin kept the line moving by ripping a double to left-center, scoring Hernaiz to make it 4-0. Bowens then walked with pinch-hitter Lamar Sparks following with a free pass of his own. With the bases now loaded, Cristopher Cespedes wiped them clean with a grand slam to right, his fourth homer of the year, pushing the Delmarva lead to 8-0. Andrew Martinez was the very next batter, and he popped a homer to left, his third of the year, capping the inning off with Delmarva up 9-0.
Cespedes capped off his day with an RBI single the very next inning, making it a double-digit Delmarva cushion, 10-0.
Zach Peek (2-2) earned the win for Delmarva, spinning five brilliant frames. Peek allowed just one hit and one walk while striking out a career high eight.
Rodney Theophile (0-4) suffered the defeat for the FredNats, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits and a walk while striking out three.
Houston Roth earned his second save of the season, firing four no-hit innings, walking one, while striking out seven.
Peek and Roth combined to at one point retire 17 consecutive FredNats batters.
Cespedes led the charge for Delmarva, tying a club-high with five RBI. Nine of 10 players who appeared in the game for Delmarva reached base while seven scored runs.
The FredNats only hit of the game was a Jeremy De La Rosa two-out single in the second.
