Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, MD - The Delmarva Shorebirds secured a series win as they blasted their way to a 14-2 win over the Fredericksburg Nationals on Saturday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
Seeking to bounce back from dropping their first series of the year last week, the Shorebirds (29-16) again teed off on Nationals (14-33) pitching in the early going.
In the bottom of the first, Mason Janvrin reached on an error to start the frame before Hudson Haskin doubled to right. Yorkislandy Alvarez brought them both home as he dumped a single down the right field line to put the Shorebirds up 2-0.
The Shorebirds exploded for seven runs in the second. Andrew Martinez walked to begin the inning and Jean Carmona then singled him to third, with Carmona moving to second on the throw in. Lamar Sparks beat out an infield single to first, scoring Martinez before Mason Janvrin rolled a single through the hole in the left side to plate Carmona. With two runners still on, Haskin bashed a home run to left, his fourth of the year, giving Delmarva a 7-0 edge. Two outs later, Cristopher Cespedes was hit by a pitch and Ryne Ogren subsequently swatted a homer to left, his first of the campaign, capping the inning with the Shorebirds up 9-0.
The FredNats got on the board in the fourth. After a walk and back-to-back fielder's choices at second, Kevin Strohschein roped a single to right. Jose Sanchez followed by poking a double to right-center, plating two, and cutting the FredNats deficit to 9-2.
That was as close as the FredNats got. The Shorebirds answered in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI double from Martinez and then tacked on four more in the sixth on a run-scoring wild pitch, RBI groundout from Sparks, and two-run homer from Janvrin, his fourth of the season, to bring the game to its final score line of 14-2.
Noah Denoyer (4-2) collected the win for Delmarva with five strong frames, allowing just two runs on four hits and two walks, while striking out a career high eight.
Michael Cuevas (0-1) was hung with the loss for the FredNats, conceding nine runs (eight earned) on seven hits and one walk while striking out one.
Every hitter in the Shorebirds lineup reached base at least once and contributed either a run scored or RBI. Ogren finished with three hits (3-for-4, HR, 2 RBI) while both Haskin (2-for-5, 2B, HR) and Janvrin (2-for-6, HR) drove in three. In total, five different Shorebirds drove in multiple runs.
Sanchez drove in the only runs of the game for the FredNats while Strohschein (2-for-4) and Mendez (2-for-4) each had multi-hit performances.
The Shorebirds and FredNats finish their series on Sunday, June 27 at Perdue Stadium. In a rematch of the series opener, Zach Peek (2-2, 3.07) starts for Delmarva against Rodney Theophile (0-4, 4.70) for the FredNats. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. with pregame coverage beginning at 1:50 p.m. on MiLB.TV and Fox Sports 960 AM with Sam Jellinek on the call.
