Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
The Myrtle Beach Pelicans bounced back for a series-finale victory over the Fayetteville Woodpeckers 8-1 on Sunday evening to win their fifth game of the week. With the win, the Birds moved up to a 62-45 record and 23-19 in the second half. Fayetteville dropped to 46-62 and 16-16 in the second half.
Myrtle Beach collected just five hits but walked eight times to bring in eight runs. Pedro Ramirez (1-4, 2 RBI) scored two on a single in the four-run eighth inning. Brett Bateman (0-1, 3 BB) walked three times and scored a run in the win.
The Pelicans' pitching staff showed more control after last night's performance as Eligio Paredes (1-0) earned the win in his Myrtle Beach debut by throwing three innings of one-run baseball with two hits and four walks allowed and three strikeouts. Jose Romero struck out five across the final two innings to pick up his first save of the year. Starter Marino Santy extended his scoreless streak to 17 innings with four shutout frames and three strikeouts.
After scoring 15 last night, the Woodpeckers were held to just one off of five hits. Tyler Whitaker (2-4, 2B) smacked the only extra-base hit and Jeron Williams (2-3, BB) scored the lone run and also posted a multi-hit game. Fayetteville went 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position in the loss.
Starter Andrew Taylor (4-7) gave up three earned runs in four innings off three hits and three walks while striking out five to take the loss. Alimber Santa followed with five earned runs in his 3 1/3 inning outing while walking five more.
The Pelicans jumped to an early lead with two runs in the first. With a runner on third and one out, Jefferson Rojas lined a single to left to bring in the run. After Rojas got to second on a stolen base, Parker Chavers hit him in on a single to left for a 2-0 lead.
Another run came across in the bottom of the third as Reivaj Garcia scored from third on a balk by Taylor.
The Woodpeckers plated their lone run in the top of the sixth. With two outs and the bases loaded, Paredes threw a wild pitch that scored Williams. Leosdany Molina popped out to end the inning.
Ismael Mena hit a triple in the bottom of the seventh with one out and scored on a sacrifice fly by David Avitia to right field to extend the lead to 4-1.
The game broke open as the Birds came together for four runs in the bottom of the eighth. Santa walked the bases loaded then walked Cristian Hernandez to plate the first run. Reliever Ian Foggo came out and immediately gave up a single to Ramirez that scored two. Ramirez got in a rundown in between first and second as Hernandez came home to clear the bases and pushed the lead to seven runs.
The Pelicans hit the road for a six-game set in Columbia starting Tuesday at 7:05 p.m.
