Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
ZEBULON, NC: The Delmarva Shorebirds (17-24) concluded their series with the Carolina Mudcats (27-15) with an impressive offensive display on Sunday as they topped Milwaukee's Single-A affiliate with an 8-4 win.
The Shorebirds would take the lead in the opening inning as a groundout to first by Matthew Etzel scored Enrique Bradfied Jr. from third base to make it 1-0 Delmarva.
Etzel would get the job done again in the third inning as he doubled off the wall in straightaway center to plate Tavian Josenberger from first base, upping the lead to 2-0.
The Mudcats would rally to take the lead in the bottom of the third on a two-run double with two outs by Jesus Chirinos. He would then score one batter later on a long single by Luis Castillo, giving Carolina their first lead at 3-2.
In the fifth, Matthew Etzel provided his biggest swing of the week as he belted a grand slam over the wall in right field to snatch the lead right back from the Mudcats as Delmarva went back in front 6-3.
Carolina would get one of those runs back as they manufactured an unearned run in the sixth, making it 6-4.
But the Shorebirds responded with two runs in the seventh with Noelberth Romero driving home Anderson De Los Santos with a single, followed by Jalen Vasquez scoring moments later on a wild pitch to give Delmarva their largest lead of the game at 8-4.
Angel Vargas and Brayner Sanchez would combine to get the final nine outs without allowing any runs, securing an 8-4 win for the Shorebirds in the series finale.
The win was given to reliever Angel Vargas (1-1) for Delmarva with Carolina starter Will Childers (2-3) taking the loss.
Matthew Etzel put an exclamation point on a strong debut series with the Shorebirds as he drove home six on a pair of hits, his 6 RBI are the most by a Delmarva player this season. Enrique Bradfield Jr. also made his presence felt on Sunday as he reached base a total of five times and was a perfect 4/4 stealing bases. Etzel, Anderson De Los Santos, Jalen Vasquez, and Adam Crampton each finished the game with multiple hits.
The Shorebirds now return home to face the Salem Red Sox with first pitch of the series opener scheduled for 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday night.
