Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, MD. - The Delmarva Shorebirds ended up on the wrong end of a see-saw battle with the Fredericksburg Nationals, losing 8-6 in 10 innings, on Friday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
Kicking off their post All-Star Break schedule, the Shorebirds (29-58, 8-13) have now lost seven straight to the Nationals (49-39, 16-6).
Will Frizzell started the scoring for the Nationals in the first, ripping an RBI double, to make it 1-0.
The Shorebirds rallied in the fourth to take the lead. After loading the bases with nobody out, Isaac De Leon drew a walk to force in the tying run. Mishael Deson then produced a sacrifice fly to center, giving Delmarva a 2-1 edge.
The Shorebirds tacked on another run in the fifth with a Cristopher Cespedes RBI single and then expanded it to a 4-1 cushion with a Michael Mantecon RBI double in the sixth.
The FredNats erupted to take the lead back in the eighth. Sammy Infante homered to kick off the frame, his 16th longball of the season. After TJ White walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch, Gerladi Diaz doubled him home. Andry Arias then walked before a fielder's choice put runners at the corners. After Yoander Rivero stole second, Jacob Young singled home both runners to vault the FredNats ahead 5-4.
That lead was short lived as the 'Birds tied it in the bottom of the eighth. Noelberth Romero singled with one away and went to third on a Mantecon base hit. Luis Valdez then tied the game at 5-5 with a sacrifice fly.
The game stayed at 5-5 until the 10th. With Arias beginning the frame at second, Rivero walked. A groundout advanced both runners before Viandel Pena brought them in with a double. Frizzell then walked and was pinch hit for by JT Arruda. Arruda and Pena then pulled off a double steal putting men at second and third. Branden Boissiere then scored Pena with a fielder's choice to make it 8-5.
The Shorebirds got one run in the last of the 10th on a Trendon Craig RBI groundout, but couldn't muster anything else.
Tyler Schoff (3-3) picked up the win in relief for the FredNats, going two innings while allowing one run on two hits and a walk, striking out four.
Joel Benitez (3-1) suffered the loss for Delmarva, allowing three runs (two earned) on one hits and two walks, striking out two.
