July 22, 2022 - Carolina League (CarL)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
Despite scoring a run in the first inning, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans fell 3-2 to the Charleston RiverDogs in the first game of the three-game weekend series on Friday night. With the loss coming out of the All-Star break, the Pelicans hold a 59-29 overall record and are 12-10 in the second half. The RiverDogs improved to 57-30 and 11-10 in the second half. Both teams post the top two best records in Minor League Baseball.
It was a cold night for the Pelicans offensively as the visitors only posted five hits. Juan Mora (2-4, 2B, R) logged his third multi-hit game in a row with his fifth double in his last three games. Josue Huma (0-4, RBI) and Kevin Alcantara (0-4, RBI) collected each RBI off two groundouts.
For the first time in his career, starting pitcher Luke Little lasted four innings as he shut out the RiverDogs in his outing. Little allowed two hits and a walk while striking out five. The loss went to Jose Miguel Gonzalez (6-3) with three runs, two earned in his three innings off four hits, and two walks while striking out another five.
Bobby Seymour (2-3, 2 RBI, BB) had a big night for Charleston with a team-leading two hits and two RBI. Number nine hitter Alejandro Pie (2-3, RBI) also posted a multi-hit game with an RBI.
RiverDogs' starter JJ Goss (1-5) earned the win with six innings and one earned run allowed off only three hits and a walk with five strikeouts. Jack Snyder took the save by throwing the final inning and retiring all three batters with one strikeout.
The Pelicans took an early lead with a run in the top of the first. Following a James Triantos double to put runners on second and third, Alcantara grounded out to short to score Mora for the game's first run.
As Jose Miguel Gonzalez came out of the bullpen, the RiverDogs even the score in the bottom of the fifth. Shane Sakasi led off the inning with a double and came in on Pie's two-out single to left field.
Charleston took the lead in the next inning with two more runs in the bottom of the sixth. The inning started with back-to-back walks by Gonzalez and a passed ball to move runners to second and third. Seymour cleared the bases on a single to left field to give the RiverDogs a 3-1 lead.
One run came in the Myrtle Beach in the top of the eighth as Ethan Hearn led off with a double. Hearn later stole third and scored on a groundout by Huma to second base as the Pelicans trailed 3-2.
Myrtle Beach would go down in order in the top of the ninth inning.
The Pelicans and RiverDogs will square off for game two on Saturday at 6:05 p.m.
