New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
The Memphis Redbirds used three runs in each of the eighth and ninth innings, defeating the New Orleans Zephyrs in comeback fashion 8-5 on Thursday night.
Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth, New Orleans rallied for two runs to take a 3-2 lead. With one out, Mike Lamb launched a 3-1 fastball over the pool in right field. Later in the inning with two outs, Gookie Dawkins roped an RBI single to left field, scoring Brett Carroll.
Holding a 3-2 lead in the top of the eighth inning, reliever Chris Leroux allowed three runs on five hits, as Memphis took a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the eighth. Allen Craig laced a two-run double and Donovan Solano had a run-scoring single to give the Memphis the lead.
Memphis added three runs in the top of the ninth, as Brett Sinkbeil gave up three hits and walked two.
The Z's rally in the bottom of the ninth was cut short after scoring two runs, as Cameron Maybin highlighted the offense thanks to a RBI single.
Zephyrs starter Brian Lawrence left in line for the win after allowing two runs on three hits and three walks over seven innings. Leroux took his first loss of the season.
For Memphis, Rich Rundles improved to 3-1, and Eduardo Sanchez notched his second save of the year after recording the final two outs.
The four-game tilt concludes tomorrow night from Zephyr Field as NOLA lefty West Whisler (1-4, 6.49) squares off against 'Birds righty Lance Lynn (7-8, 5.42).
