Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
ZEBULON, N.C. - A two-out two-run error in the ninth inning was the difference for the Delmarva Shorebirds in a 9-7 win over the Carolina Microbrews on Thursday night at Five County Stadium.
The Shorebirds (59-46) managed to never trail in the ball game but the Microbrews (62-43) rallied multiple times to tie the game.
John Rhodes opened the game with a double for Delmarva, then stole third, and scored on a wild pitch to start the scoring.
With two on in the bottom of the first and one away, Alex Binelas singled to left with an ensuing error allowing a run to score on the play to tie the game at 1-1 for the Microbrews.
Coby Mayo singled to start the second and advanced to second on a Donta' Williams walk before a perfectly executed double steal. A wild pitch then allowed Mayo to score to give Delmarva the lead back.
Micah Bello smashed a solo homer, his second of the year, for the Microbrews in the bottom of the second to retie the game.
Delmarva loaded the bases with two away in the second, allowing Rhodes to unload the bags with a double, making it 5-2 Delmarva. Rhodes then scored himself on another wild pitch.
Tyler Black cut in the Microbrews' deficit with an RBI double in the fifth before Andre Nnebe tied the game with a three-run homer in the sixth.
Jacob Teter smashed a solo shot in the seventh, his second of the campaign, to push Delmarva ahead again 7-6.
Bello came through again for the Microbrews in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI knock to knot the score at 7-7.
With the bases loaded and two outs in the ninth, Rhodes hit a chopper to short that Carolina attempted to turn into a force out at second, but the throw sailed into rightfield, allowing two runs to score and ultimately giving Delmarva a 9-7 win.
Rickey Ramirez (2-0) earned the win for Delmarva with 2.2 dominant frames of shutout relief. Ramirez allowed just a walk while striking out five.
Miguel Guerrero (6-3) was tagged with the loss despite not allowing an earned run for Carolina. He conceded two unearned runs on two hits and two walks, striking out five.
Jake Lyons started for Delmarva and despite not factoring into the final decision, punched out a career high 10 over 4.1 innings.
The Shorebirds will look to ride the momentum of a late-inning win into their next matchup with the Microbrews on Friday, September 3. Carlos Tavera (0-0, 0.00) makes his first start of the year for Delmarva against Michele Vassalotti (5-7, 6.68) for Carolina. First pitch is slated for 7:00 p.m. with pregame coverage beginning at 6:45 p.m. on Fox Sports 960 AM and streaming online on IHeartRadio. MiLB.TV coverage will be provided by Carolina.
