Big Weekend of Hockey Begins Tonight for Charlottetown
January 24, 2020 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Charlottetown Islanders News Release
The Charlottetown Islanders are looking for a rebound after last weekend. This weekend's action is a good place to start.
After tough back-to-back losses at home to the Cape Breton Eagles, the Isles take a quick visit to Saint John to take on the Sea Dogs tonight at 7:00pm. It's the kickoff to a busy weekend of hockey for the Islanders, who will play three games in three nights before the weekend is all said and done.
Charlottetown (23-18-5-0) gave up 13 goals in two games last weekend, including eight in Saturday's defeat, in performances that head coach Jim Hulton called disgraceful. In response, the team took a full week of practice to reset the batteries, focusing on the big picture rather than the finer details and getting back to basics.
"It's been an important week of practice for us," said defenseman Noah Laaouan on the week. "We didn't get the results we wanted last weekend, so we came in to practice this week and got back to basics. You can see that everyone here wants to fix what happened last weekend."
Laaouan, unfortunately, won't have the opportunity to help his teammates out in that regard; he's sustained a knee injury during practice this week. His status is listed as week-to-week. The team will also be without Thomas Casey as he serves the first of a two-game suspension tonight. Cedric Desruisseaux and Drew Johnston, both sidelined with upper-body injuries, are game-time decisions.
The Sea Dogs (22-23-1-0) found themselves on the right side of a high-scoring affair this week, coming off a 10-6 victory over the Gatineau Olympiques Wednesday night. It was a full team effort offensively in that game; just two Saint John players were held off the scoresheet, with just five players recording multi-point efforts.
One of those players was rookie forward Joshua Roy. The 1st overall pick in the 2019 QMJHL Draft recorded a goal and three assists, leading all players in the game. After a slow start to the season, Roy has been one of the hottest players for the Sea Dogs since the start of December. 17 of Roy's 26 points this season have come since December 1st, including 8 points this month. Three of those points came in the last meeting between these two teams, when the Sea Dogs came from behind to beat the Islanders 4-3 at TD Station.
Don't miss a second of the action tonight! Tune in to a special edition of Fair Isle Ford Isles Radio featuring the Rogers broadcast of the game! Listen live tonight.
