Cape Breton Eagles News Release
NOTES FROM THE GAME
- Five third period goals broke a 1-1 game open as the Cape Breton Eagles topped the Saint John Sea Dogs 6-1. Cam MacDonald's goal early in the period on a five on three power play was the winner.
- The win was the 250th in the QMJHL for Cape Breton coach Louis Robitaille.
- Six different players scored for the Eagles, including the first goals of the season for Brayden Schmitt & Luke Patterson. Cam MacDonald, Olivier Houde, Cam Squires, and Callum Aucoin also scored.
- Patterson, Schmitt, and Lubos Stahon registered two assist games. Lincoln Waugh also collected an assist, the first point of his QMJHL career, on Patterson's goal.
- Jakob Milota picked up the win in goal for the Eagles, stopping 26 of 27 shots. Justin Robinson allowed five goals on 31 shots, in addition to an empty netter.
The game past the halfway mark without finding its first goal, but then both teams found the back of the net before the end of the second period. Schmitt's goal opened the scoring, a sharp angle shot from the right boards. After a review, it was ruled a goal. The Sea Dogs wouldn't have the same luck when a would be Noah Reinhart goal was called back.
Less than a minute after the disallowed goal, Saint John got a goal that would count- a power play marker on an individual effort from Vince Élie. It was 1-1 to end the period, but the game may have turned with 11 seconds left in the second stanza when minors were called against Saint Joihn's Peter Reynolds & Nate Tivey.
The Eagles had a five on three to open the period, and capitalized when MacDonald scored from the front of the goal. While Saint John killed off the second minor, it didn't remain a one goal game for long as Houde's goal came at the 2:06 mark. Ten minutes later, Patterson ripped a shot over Justin Robinson's shoulder to make it 4-1.
With under five minutes to go, Saint John coach Travis Crickard elected to lift his goaltender for an extra attacker but the move did not pay off as Squires hit the empty goal after a pass from Patterson. A trickling shot by Aucoin finished the scoring for the day.
