Big Seventh Lifts Mountaineers

The Vermont Mountaineers defeated the Danbury Westerners 4-1 in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action at Recreation Field on Sunday night. With the win, the Mountaineers move to 12-6 on the summer. Vermont sits atop the Northern Division standings, two games ahead of the second place Sanford Mainers.

The Mountaineers put together their big inning in the seventh, scoring three runs to take a 4-1 lead. Nick Solak (Louisville) led off the inning with an infield single. Rob Knightes (St. John's) followed with a bunt single to setup first and second with no outs. Two batters later, Adam Picard (UMass) hit an RBI double, scoring Solak and moving Knightes to third, to break the 1-1 tie. Josh Treff (Northeastern) hit an RBI single in the next at bat to score Knightes and make it 3-1 Mountaineers. Two batters later, Trey Amburgey (St. Petersburg) hit a pinch hit sacrifice fly to score Picard from third and give Vermont a 4-1 edge.

Vermont scored the first run of the contest in the fourth inning. Alex Caruso (St. John's) led off with a double to left field. Mike Vigliarolo (St. Louis) followed with an RBI single to score Caruso and give the Mountaineers a 1-0 lead. For Vigliarolo, it marked his twelfth RBI of the season, tying Amburgey for the team lead. Amburgey later drove in his thirteenth run of the season in the seventh.

Elliot Ashbeck (Bradley) started and was very good in his fourth outing of the season. The right-hander tossed six innings of one run ball. He allowed five hits, no walks and struck out three. Ashbeck did not receive a decision.

Robert Strader (Louisville) allowed no runs on two hits and no walks over two innings of relief work. Strader earned the win to move to 1-0 on the summer.

Jared Gesell (UNCW) got the save, his fourth of the season, pitching a scoreless ninth. Gesell gave up one hit and struck out two.

Danbury starter Andrew Schwaab (Missouri) took the loss to move to 0-1. He allowed four earned runs on eight hits over six and one-third innings. He struck out two Vermont batters and didn't walk any.

The Mountaineers return to action Tuesday night when they hit the road to take on division rival, the Keene Swamp Bats, for a 6:30 meeting at Alumni Field. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com.
